The NCAA has decided to allow an extra year of eligibility next year for any Juco transfers who will have exhausted their eligibility at the end of this season. For the Bobcats, that would mean Jon Johnson, JT Reed, and Cole Sain would all seemingly have the opportunity to come back next year.

Interesting to see if it applies retroactively. The article I read was mainly forward looking, never considered any talent that might already be on the team. Any thoughts?

The way I read it was that it was a decision only for those that would've exhausted their eligibility this year and played Juco similar to Pavia. One time decision for now until it gets settled in court. Anyone that still has eligibility the decision doesn't seem to apply to at the moment.

The next thing will be guys playing in NAIA for one to four years and the transferring to an NCAA school for one to four years.

No...the next thing is unlimited eligibility. If the players get paid by the school and therefore become employees of the university there is no way the NCAA wins a lawsuit limiting eligibility to xx number of years. All these decisions like the juco stuff are to avoid those lawsuits...but they are coming.

I brought this up awhile back, too. The only real way to avoid it is by collective bargaining with a players’ group/union in which both sides agree to a set amount of eligible years to play a sport. The NCAA rules regarding eligibility have been challenged for years, and with NIL now in play, an argument could be made that non-negotiated limits on eligibility are a violation of constitutional rights. If someone wants to pay Tommy $5 million next season to advertise their business on the contingency he plays football as a graduate student at a university, that career option isn’t available to him at present.

I’m not saying this is a good idea on the rules and challenges, just that arguments are already being crafted to do so against the NCAA on them.

So can Hardy get an extra year of eligibility?

I would say Sain, Reed, and Johnson could absolutely come back based on what I've read about the ruling. If they did, that would be awesome.

Centers Nyland and Kaplan will be a Sophomore and RFr respectively. If Sain came back they still have plenty of time to start after next year.

If Johnson came back, Powdrell and Johnson would be the starters. McMillan and Carr, possibly Harmon would be the rotation guys similar to how the 3 main CBs rotated this year.

Reed would more than likely be in a competition with Mastel and Rollins.

I don't the see the problem.

It would be great for team, but similar to Covid years I think the younger guys and HS recruits don't get the opportunities they thought were there. Let's just pick Nylund. Opportunity to start as sophomore and play 3 years or he waits another and gets 2 years.
