Tyler Walker - OC
This dude isn’t getting enough kudos. We all love to pile on when the coordinators aren’t calling what our madden playbook says to call.
Really impressed with his growth and how he’s calling games.

I love the Bobcats and the Miami Hurricanes an unhealthy level

I love the play calling on both sides of the ball so far this year. Definitely agree about Walker, we don’t try dumb stuff in important moments yet we mix it up enough to make defenses respect the play action pass.

Both coordinators have done remarkably well from the get go. Imagine the stat production the cats would have of the 1’s played wire to wire.

Only one I didn't like was the run on 4th and 2. Didn't mind run, but could have audibles

Agree. I’d give him an A so far.
I remember last years PSU game had me scratching my head on the first half gameplan.

They’ve both been awesome! I was left scratching my head almost every game at least half a dozen times last year. this year only a couple the whole year, including the 4th and two yesterday. Not sure if Tommy had the option to audible out of that call, but PSU must have had 10 in the box!!

I feel like Walker has much better in game feel. If something is working, he tends to stick with it and build on it, rather than try to show off formations. With Humphrey gouging teams for 5+/ carry, it makes way more sense to me to keep running it, and then occasionally pull a play action, or hand to the motion guy coming across with similar action. I feel like Walker does an excellent job of putting our guys in position to succeed.

Agreed. He's been a big upgrade, even if he's had experienced players to run what he's calling...4KornerKat wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2024 1:33 pmI feel like Walker has much better in game feel. Listen to CN's podcast last week with TG. They talk about how a big aspect is his coaching style with Tommy. If you read between the lines Housewright would lay into him and chew him out whereas they said Tommy needs someone to explain to him what the mistake was and how to fix it.

Very interesting. Tommy's a "Technician", so I could see how someone who is able to parse and teach through a mistake would be much more effective than a TH who would just berate him. No wonder he's having an amazing senior season!lutecat wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2024 10:06 pmListen to CN's podcast last week with TG. They talk about how a big aspect is his coaching style with Tommy. Saw that firsthand last year when HW was on the sidelines near our seats. It was pretty clear neither Sean or Tommy took kindly to that style of coaching.lutecat wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2024 10:06 pmListen to CN's podcast last week with TG. I feel like that’s the kind of thing an employer would want to know before hiring someone.BleedingBLue wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2024 10:52 pmSaw that firsthand last year when HW was on the sidelines near our seats. I thought Housewright always coached from the press box. Could be wrong!
Speaking of Tyler Walker, if anyone out there is reading this just know that he's a terrible coach and FBS schools definitely shouldn't look at hiring him after only one season of coordinator experience. That would be a really bad idea for them.

I also agree that he’s done an outstanding job! He hasn’t tried to get cute nor stubborn to keep running what doesn’t work. Also, he has been adding bit by bit pieces to the base plays that open up more and more creative options. I’m not sure we’re where we want to be completely, but after Idaho, I started to feel like we were seeing the beginning of some polish on the Offense. Great job Tyler!

2 examples of how he uses portions of our offense to combat specific defenses. Couple early games we saw swung passes to Jones, absent for several games, then ran on back to back plays opening drive. 2nd is seam passes we have seen in some games and not others. Seems to run he feels will work vs opposing defense

Re: Tyler Walker - OC
Taking nothing away from TW, player use of sideline tablets this year is probably in Tommy's wheelhouse. When I've watched replays or away games, Tommy goes right to the bench, puts on headphones, and grabs a tablet. I imagine this emphasizes the analytical over the emotional with the OC.

Having instant video capability on the sideline is going to be a great thing. Too bad the NCAA didn't make that rule change a year or two earlier so that Tommy could have taken full advantage of it, seems like they were way behind the times as the NFL has had them for a long time now.rivercat wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2024 7:27 amTaking nothing away from TW, player use of sideline tablets this year is probably in Tommy's wheelhouse. Re: Tyler Walker - OC
I’ve been waiting for weeks for someone to mention this. They’re mixing in swing passes at good times (early) it seems and I gotta believe that is anxiety inducing for DCs. They also have the added dimension of getting the ball out of Mellott’s hand quickly. Seems to set up other things and gets the ball in playmakers hands. The WRs are also used on the sidelines for quick passes. They went to Provience on a deeper route down the seem on the next drive. And then back to the to Lonergan for a TD that was called back. Looked like they had the Vikings’ heads spinning.tetoncat wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2024 7:25 am2 examples of how he uses portions of our offense to combat specific defenses. It’s like teams need 8 in the box and need to cover sideline to sideline and need to cover deep routes.
