I glanced at the schedule. I would assume it September 13th.

Yeah, I'm guessing at home to take the place of the canceled SFA game. There cannot be a frigin way the Cats go to Mercyhurst.

Only reason I can think is if Mercyhurst insisted and we hardly had a choice bc we needed the game last minute. But still, if we go there, that’s bad from Costello.

Why would either school agree to this? It's of no benefit to either program...

Mercyhurst agreed because they get a big payday that will probably pay for most of their travel to away games for the entire season. The Cats agreed because it's tough to schedule non-conference games a year out and they quickly found a willing participant. SFA screwed all this up.

MSU usually pays about $250K for a team to visit. Last I checked travel costs were about $100K per game (may have gone up). You don't make much money!

An opponent like Mercyhurst makes a lot more sense on the 2025 schedule when MSU opens up with Oregon and South Dakota State. There's a very realistic chance of starting 0-2 and they'll need to start banking some wins if that happens. If Mercyhurst 2.0 is a home game that will be a 7-game home schedule for MSU next year. The spot being filled on the schedule next year is again the gap left by Stephen F. Austin canceling the home-and-home series, this would've been the return trip to play SFA as originally scheduled.

They are receiving $275K this year and they only have two other away games that are farther than 300 miles from home (370 and 460). Other than MSU, I doubt they fly to any other of their away games. This is a school with 2,500 students. Okay, at least $175K that they wouldn't of otherwise had in their budget.

We don't agree on a lot, but this is a no-brainer for a school like Mecyhurst trying to make the transition to FCS. And MSU doesnt' have a lot of options. At least with these guys, we aren't putting a no-counter D2 school on the schedule.

It makes 100% sense for both teams: Mercyhurst gets to show recruits, fans, and donors that its serious about playing good FCS football, and MSU gets to sell out a home game & log a legit FCS counter in the win column.

I give Costello a ton of credit for making it happen at the last second.

I think we need to respect our opponent and play whoever is in front of us on the schedule. 8)

True, and I posted that exact thing on another thread, which I am guessing you're alluding to. Our team should always possess that attitude. Doesn't mean I have to like it...

If this had been scheduled years in advance I wouldn't like it either. Given the reality of the situation I'm guessing that in both 2024 and 2025 Mercyhurst was the best out of a list of non-ideal options for scheduling these two games at such short notice after SFA cancelled on us.

It makes sense given the circumstances but it’s almost impossible to be interested in seeing this game as a fan. This is the first game in 20 years that I just don’t want to go see. Especially not twice.
