This week's game balls go to:

Offense -- Tommy Mellot. Why? Well, probably for not the reasons you would expect. Yes, he was efficient in the pass game and had over 200 combined yards of offense. But he's my choice this week because of the maturity he showed in managing the game as well as himself. I was harsh on him a couple weeks ago, but he stepped up big time against Maine -- and he slid not once, but twice to avoid the big hit!!

Defense -- Danny U. Five tackles on the day but he also records the first Bobcat sack on defense for the season. Set the tone for the rest of the first half.

Special teams -- Myles Sansted. Young man was perfect on the day. Five of five on PATs, but bigger yet, he was 2 of 2 on FGs. Might be building some confidence...

12th Man -- the flyover! Wasn't expecting that, but how friggin' awesome to have that with everything else going on - Gold Rush, new scoreboard, upgraded tailgate area. Great day to be a Bobcat!!

I'm giving a game ball to Coach Howe for his passion and fire. After the second Maine series the D line all sat down, coach Howe looked at them very calmly, said a few quite words, then exploded. He had a large white board in front of him with Xs and Os representing the lines, and 2 lines drawn representing the tackle box. He yelled for about 20 seconds about not letting Maine's QB get outside the tackle box, then yelled, "I know you all know what that means, but this here (begin smashing of dry erase marker on whiteboard outside the tackle box) is not inside the tackle box!!! He's been here too much already. No more out here!" He then smashed the marker several more times against the white board, breaking it and spewing ink all over his hand, and cutting his thumb in the process. All the DL guys gathered around nodded, and he went back to his normal demeanor. I've always loved watching him interact with the DL, but that one was more entertaining than usual. It's pretty clear those guys respect the hell out of him. Watching him teach on the sideline between drives is pretty cool.

My game ball absolutely has to go to West Wilson for gracing us with his deeply insightful interview during the Gold Rush broadcast. West's contributions to Bobcat Football—and honestly, society itself—are just beyond measure. Truly inspiring stuff!
