Ok I know it was just one half of football but the 2s and 3s really struggled last night. Maine was not great and only putting up 3 points in a whole half is not great. Reed continued to struggle is the time he got and Wilson looked better but not amazing. With a LOT of seniors on the team these 2s and 3s better start getting ready for their moment.

We have some work to do with the 2nd and 3rd strings for sure, but thought that Wilson looked decent. Was impressed with his passing. Coming in off the bench after standing around for an entire half in the heat would be difficult. Some of those guys have never played in a college game, so nerves are also a factor.

MSU was lucky the 2/3s didn’t play out of their heads.

I realize it was a pretty small sample size, but I liked what i saw from chance Wilson. He is super athletic, and that throw he made on the run was a dart.

I feel like Tommy’s backup needs to be the same type of player…. Doesn’t make sense to me to have Reed coming in as more of a pocket passer that doesn’t run at all, where we would need a whole different type of game plan.

Wilson threw one of the best incomplete passes I’ve ever seen.

I would have to watch the replay, but I think the receiver let up on the route and it may have been complete. Had he kept on going.

He gator armed it a bit, and had a bit of a tug on his waist from the defender.

I thought it was six for sure. Provience has great hands.

He was pretty upset with himself when he came back to the sidelines (provience)

The second and third string got valuable reps. That’s what was important. In some cases fourth strain depending on how you look at it. Definitely have to figure out the quarterback situation.
Not sure if the playcalling helped read at all. But Wilson is definitely better suited for the type of game we’ve been playing for the last several years.

Our 2s were going against their 1s. They shouldn't look the same as our 1s, if they are as good as our 1s they won't be here next year...just the facts. They are 2s for a reason. Also when looking at the 2s you can't look at the whole thing and say our 2s aren't ready. You have to look at individuals because i doubt any team in America can have their entire 2nd squad go out and look no different than the starting squad. We have depth at certain positions and the positions we don't have depth with I see us using other players to move over and play in those spots and being able to get the job done. We are ok at this point. Plus it's good to get these game reps. The more you play the better you will get and this work was good for their development. Practice only does so much, you need to be in the game to really get your feet under you. They will be ok.

Well, the backups should continue to keep getting some run…. I expect the entire 3rd string to be in the game by end of the first quarter against mercyhurst. Haha

I thought he had it too, and IF Provience could have launched just a bit…it would have been a highlight reel!

Wilson just seems to have the “IT” factor…I’d ditch the depth chart and put him on top as #2…and start the process of bringing him in at Mercyhurst now!

Yeah, the fact that Wilson was able to look so much better and more effective in his short time playing than Reed has in his (comparatively) more experience makes me think he should solidly be QB2. I want to believe in Reed, and granted he's also had limited opportunities to show off his skillset, but he's always seemed to struggle passing the ball when given the chance in games. Hopefully we get to see more of both of them as the season goes on and get a better idea of who is more ready to start. I'd love if one of them was ready to lead the team next year so we don't have to go to the portal for a QB1 in the offseason.

Good post. I think that sometimes people forget that quality 2s can sub in with the 1s without big drop offs, but when the entire unit goes to the 2s, theres going to be a big drop. It should be all part of the normal process.

The fact that the Cats can put in the 2s against a CAA teams #1s speaks volumes.

Game reps against 1's are so valuable. In almost anybody's first game experience, the game is moving faster than they're ready for. Sure they're 2's for a reason talent and size-wise, but sometimes guys just need reps. Some of them won't be ready this year and that's OK. Some will grow so much from playing Saturday and hopefully a lot more against Mercyhurst that they'll be far ahead of where they were before Saturday. I guess I'd hoped these guys would be further along too, but this experience will be huge for a bunch of them.

I wish we had done 1 good drive in 2nd half. Reed was in with first unit and missed that blitz but if we score there and shut them down first series of D I think 2nd and 3rd units get their feet under them. A quick turnover, 2nd unit doesn't stop them and Maine played with a little more emotion.
