A cool 140 passer rating. 👍

The way he came back from his mistakes and the slow start made what he did more remarkable.

Jones also had a huge fourth quarter. 5 carries for 109 yards (4 for 16, excluding the long run) and 1 catch for six yards. Plus, a huge block on Mellott's td run.

I think Adam Jones played himself into a lot more playing time yesterday even after Julius comes back. The play on the last drive where he picked up the blitzer and then had the presence of mind to follow Tommy over to the sideline for a dump off pass and first down was an incredible individual play.

I blame the mistakes on bad playcalling in the first three quarters. I think Tommy is way better player than the playcalling and how he played indicated.

I think it was a combination of both, I can think of at least two plays in the first quarter where Tommy had an open receiver and just missed the throw. Play calling definitely appeared to improve as the game went on, or perhaps the defense just got tired out from chasing Scottre and Adam all over the field and the same plays all of a sudden started to work better.

I think Tommy is short and he struggles to see over lineman. I’m not guaranteeing that that’s the reason he missed those throws, but I do think it is a possibility. I think that that is something that you have to see and understand as a coach and get him to a place on the field where he can see and can make those throws. That puts us right back to what I say repeatedly yesterday, which is roll Tommy out

One of the plays I mentioned was a short sideline route on which I can guarantee there wasn't an offensive lineman in the way. But you're obviously bound and determined to blame the coaching staff for anything that goes wrong, so have at it I guess.

The first fumble 6 is completely on Tommy. He never saw or felt the pressure at all. And he was inaccurate to start. So I guess I disagree it was the play calling. All that said, he was impressive when he got it going and he was nails on the final drive.

Earlier in the game, when the weather was hot, Tommy mentioned something about not being able to get a good grip on the ball due to sweat. That would certainly explain fumbles, errant throws, etc..... that are uncharacteristic of Tommy Mellott.

Yeah he's definitely not a fumbler. I thought his pocket presence or comfort level maybe, improved as the game went. He was not climbing early in the game like he did later, especially the last drive. First game stuff, no doubt. And the sweaty hand thing makes sense. We played on the surface of the sun.

Yeah, that play was incredible. His long TD run will get a lot of attention but that play says a lot more about him. Very impressive.

One other observation I figured I'd post in this thread - is kudos to the coaches to sticking to their guns and not running the hell out of Tommy. I don't remember hardly any designed QB Runs\draws, other than maybe some option plays. Honestly, toward the end when the game was on the line and we REALLY NEEDED a few yards, I found myself thinking screw it, turn him loose. LOL. But they never really did, I thought for sure there would be some QB draw plays in those final drives.

I mean, yeah. His breakaway speed is something the backfield hasn’t had since Troy played RB as a freshman. You can’t keep speed and size like that off the field at this level of football. He outran the entire Lobo secondary.

He also had a long TD run last year in a game when the bench guys got some playing time in a win.

It’s no secret that I’m not happy with Vigen’s in game coaching and haven’t been since mid last season. I’ll refer you back to the second sentence of my response. Furthermore if you don’t want speculation be more specific with your examples.

I agree with most of what you said. There were still some offensive and defensive play calls that were questionable.

Timing was off with his WR at times in the 1st half and start of 3rd quarter. Route goes 7 yards, but WR has to come back 2 yards to get the ball. WR goes in, and Mellott thought he was going out. Combine that with WR falling on short out routes twice (that I saw). These are all things that you see every single year in the 1st game. The positive thing is, those are all VERY correctable. This was their 1st game, on the road, against an FBS team (sure, not a good one, but still FBS). I have no actual concerns about Tommy or our offense.

It was Walker’s first game calling plays and Daly’s 2nd or 3rd. We’re going to see more questionable calls too. Everybody is learning.

I was appreciative with the coaches too and did not wish they would run him, but rather too often, we try to pound the middle of the field with the run game and turn the ball over on downs. My thought is that the play calling ought to make the defense defend the entire width of the field with either short out passes or end-arounds mixed in more often.
