I think one reason the place-kicking sticks out right now is that MSU has been blessed with a really excellent bunch of kickers — perhaps in the long run the best in the conference. Stenerud sort of started a tradition. But I remember Muri, Cunningham, Daly, Bailey, Glessner — I know there were others that were really good. It’s not a position we are used to worrying about much.
Pat Bolton in the mid seventies was money.
I hope we're not all forgetting the guy that outplayed Mason Crosby on his home turf.
Of course. Jeff Hastings. My brain is getting tired these days. And he didn’t kick much that year because the offense didn’t offend very much. But it goes to my point — w’ve had a lot of good kicking. Jeff was 4-4 against Colorado that day, with two from over 40 yards. He scored 13 of the 19 points. On the season (2006) he was 12-12 on field goals (4-4 over 40) and 25-25 on extra points. That’s more like it.

When you say "Over 40" you mean 40! That was his max range. He was always dead on but 40 was his range.

Especially a few weeks into the portal opening. If he was just kinda unhappy, he'd have entered the portal right after spring ball finished up instead of waiting over a week. This reeks of someone who got a secret message saying he could get big bucks if he entered the portal before it closes (today).

That would do about as much good as throwing your life savings at a bunch of lottery tickets, but I guess it's worth a shot since it doesn't cost anything to offer a guy.

Yeah I was actually going to say...I think there's pretty close to a 0% chance he comes here, but you have to throw out an offer, realistic or not.

I think it’s time to rename the “PORTAL” and name it “THE REVOLVING DOOR”! :D

When I say “over 40”, that’s what the Game Stats show. Someone will argue anything around here anymore. 😁 But here are the details. These are his 40 and over field goals from 2006 only. His longest against Colorado was 44 yards, with another from 41. He hit from 40 against EWU. And he hit the fourth from 47 against Northern Colorado. Those 4 average 43.0 yards. I think we’d have been happy last year with 100% out to 47 yards.

If Hastings could have hit over 50 he would have had a better NFL career than Crosby. Guy was clutch.

We’ll see how quickly he announces a new scho … errrr … football team. This goes to my question of the academic vetting/admission/registration process. If it’s overnight …

MSU ranked 11th out of 12 Big Sky teams in XP percentage (Cal Poly was worse) and FG percentage (NAU was worse).

I'm sure the coaching staff is trying to find players who will improve MSU's performance in the kicking game as well as in all other areas, but it's silly to just assume that MSU can go out into the portal and easily find a better kicker than the ones who are already on the roster.

If anyone would rather watch something fun instead of rehashing a game from six months ago, here's highlights from MSU's 1984 Playoff Semifinal win.

Where did we sit in net kickoffs and net punting.
Punting
Dirk Nelson

When Dirk Nelson joined the Montana State football team in the fall of 1982 as a transfer from Kansas State University, there was no way of knowing that he would become the first punter inducted into Montana State's Wendy's Bobcat Hall of Fame.
Nelson finished in the top 15 in punting average nationally for all three of his seasons at Montana State, and missed by just a shade finishing the 1984 season with the top average in the nation. His 43.4 yards-per-punt average that fall remains the sixth-best season in school history, and his average of 41.6 yards-per-punt in his career remains the third-best in school history.
Upon graduating from MSU, Nelson earned his master's degree in physical education from Kansas in 1986, and four years later earned his Ph.D. in education from that University. He has served as an educator and administrator for many years, and for the past year has served as Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Science at West Texas A&M.
Nelson also earned Academic All-America District VII honors, and was named to Montana State's All-Century Team.

Kicking
Mark Carter
He didn't have a real strong leg on kickoffs but was pretty decent on field goals and extra points.
(1981-1984): #4 All-Time in Career Scoring at MSU; #2 in FGs made in a Career (45); Tied for 2nd in FGs made in a Game (4); 6th best Career FG % (.634)
Some great pists and info on this. My original question was on those stats from last year, but I posted under the 84 video. My bad.

I’ve watched that play hundreds of times, including from the East grandstands when it happened. I see those people on the video walking outside the stadium or away from the stands and I always wondered what they thought when they heard the crowd erupt when Joe intercepted that pass and when the kickoff was recovered. Those were two of the loudest moments I’ve ever experienced in that stadium.

Never watched him play a snap of football. I just want a Bobcat QB named General Booty to cheer for.
