Askelson Targeting Penalty
That wasn’t targeting according to the letter of the rule. His face mask *maybe* glanced off of 15’s helmet but it wasn’t the crown and 15 was sliding late all day.
Bad call and glad it didn’t matter other than a half off to rest for Nolan.

Re: Askelson Targeting Penalty
The sad part is that football is a very limited opportunity sport. He’s a senior and only has so many left in him, assuming he doesn’t make a next level roster. The white hat just absolutely screwed him out of his last homecoming game at Bobcat Stadium. The game results aside, this is why I’m pissed about it.

Nolan was pissed after. On the next play, Vigen had to pull him back on the sideline when he was yelling at the refs/PSU.tdub wrote: ↑Sun Oct 01, 2023 12:12 pmThe sad part is that football is a very limited opportunity sport. The way targeting is administered across college football is a debacle and an embarrassment. The officials yesterday were in completely over their heads.

Re: Askelson Targeting Penalty
The white hat official yesterday is a known bad actor. He's the worst ref in the big sky, and has been for probably a decade. Sadly, these types of calls are indicative of his lousy track record. Wish there was some way his ineptitude could be held accountable.
Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

One of the worst calls I have ever seen. Unbelievable.

So many questions. Where was the launching of the crown? Where was the forceful contact to the neck or head area? Where was the intent to injure?

Agree with all posts here on this targeting issue. Vigen, as head coach, had to be diplomatic saying the letter of the rule needs to be followed to keep players safe, Pretty sure he didn't agree with the call, though.grizzh8r wrote: ↑Sun Oct 01, 2023 12:46 pmThe white hat official yesterday is a known bad actor. Something needs to change, and I think Keaton Gillogly's radio color commentator offered a reasonable suggestion: Have two categories of "targeting."
The first one being obviously "deliberate/intentional" (e.g., the Robby Hauck flavor) with the penalty the same as current, and one that is "incidental" or unintentional (e.g., Askelson's call from yesterday) with a penalty equivalent to unnecessary roughness--15 yards--then continue the play with everyone still in the game.
Sure, there would still be gray areas difficult to decipher, but it would at least offer an option if the player's action under review is in strong doubt. Not sure how such change could even be brought to the NCAA's attention for actual consideration, let alone implementation, but it's food for thought at the very least.

Re: Askelson Targeting Penalty
Would have been a highly questionable call had it been a personal foul for touching the QB when sliding. Absolutely indefensible call of targeting.

Re: Askelson Targeting Penalty
I've never seen Vigen talk to and berate the officials as much as he did yesterday. He was laying into the Line Judge after the targeting call both during the review and after. Late in the 2nd quarter he was incensed with the Line Judge and you could hear him clear as day say, " I just talked to you about that and asked you to watch for it!"

Re: Askelson Targeting Penalty
So, that's two questionable calls in two weeks, one much more egregious -- in terms of being BS -- than the other. Does this now put the Cats under greater scrutiny and subject to more, potentially questionable, targeting calls?

Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps if us, the fans, make a huge and relentless stink about this to the conference they will think twice before making a terrible call.

Re: Askelson Targeting Penalty
I'd say so. There aren't consequences to refs doing a poor job. If anything, they'll watch the tape and see that we have been called for X number of targeting/personal foul penalties so we must be more likely to behave this way. They'll be on heightened alert to find actions that they can flag.

Yes. So simple. Flagrant 1 flagrant 2 is the framework. Every one is video reviewed anyway. With the podunk officiating in this league it's a fix that could really help.OutlanderCatAlum wrote: ↑Sun Oct 01, 2023 1:20 pmAgree with all posts here on this targeting issue. Didn't there used to be two levels and they only recently went all or nothing? Or am I thinking NFL?GoldstoneCat wrote: ↑Sun Oct 01, 2023 2:03 pmYes. So simple. Re: Askelson Targeting Penalty
What’s crazy to me is that this is the kind of helmet to helmet contact that occurs on probable 80% of tackles. We should probably stating reviewing every tackle during the game. This is one of the worst calls I have seen.
Punters are people too!!
