TV for Portland State game

Post by John K » Tue Sep 26, 2023 12:27 pm

I may not make it to the Portland State game on Saturday, and I'm not seeing it listed on the Spectrum channel/program guide. MTN has 3 channels here in GF, and one of them lists the Ryder Cup, and the other two list the ISU-gris game. I'm guessing that one of those two will actually show our game instead, but does anyone have any insight about the TV coverage?

Athletics website shows every remaining game on MTN (Scripps) with the exception of Sac State, which is on ESPN2. Not sure what's up with the channel guide in Great Falls. Maybe the CW?

Spectrum doesn't carry the new "MTN Network.". If you go to what used to be CW (kbzk2 in Bozeman) it says "programming no longer available."

I did find out game last week in KBZK (KPAX in Missoula, don't know GF or Billings) but only in the 3rd q after I had given up and watched most of the game via ESPN+ .

The guide didn't ever say that it was MSU football, so I didn't even look at what actually televised until I saw a post on KPAX that they were broadcasting it.

I don't know that to tell you John.... Just maybe have a back up plan.

This switch on Scripps isn't great half way through the season

I was really happy to see that the SWX/MTN feed was the feed used on ESPN+ this season. Last season was brutal!

Thanks for the info everyone. I called the local MTN station after my original post, and they said it's being carried on the new MTN network, which as kcatz noted, is not being carried by Spectrum, in GF or anywhere in Montana I guess. They said this is the only game that isn't being televised on their primary channel, except for the Sac State game on ESPN2. Looks like I'll be watching this one on ESPN+.

So when they promote that they will carry them all season it isn't true. :^o

SDSU game they kept promoting and when I went to watch was blocked on streaming so couldn't get thru my YouTube TV. Couldn't even see the National College game that should have been on there. Not sure why streaming was blacked out. ESPN+ Saved the day

So unless a person has a digital antennae, the only way to see the Hillsboro State game on TV is on ESPN+.

Is this correct?

I think it's limited to Spectrum, I didn't see anyone comment about Direct or Dish issues with the change.

I love ESPN+. If any of you dont have it, I highly recommend getting it. Its cheap and it comes bundled with so many things; other online streaming services, cell phone plans, etc.

I am guessing this weeks coverage was affected because the Cats and Griz play at the same time. Some stations are carrying one game, while other stations are carrying the other game.

I don't know that this would be applicable elsewhere in Montana, but here in GF, they are carrying the gris game on their primary channel, KRTV channel 11/511 on Spectrum, and the Cats game on the new MTN channel, which is channel 12/512, but not carried by Spectrum. I spoke with Heath Heggem who is the sports director, and he said normally they would have carried the Cats game on KTGF channel 6/506, the NBC affiliate, which is owned by the the same company as KRTV, since the MTN channel isn't carried by Spectrum. They couldn't do that this week though, because of the Ryder Cup on NBC. He said that NBC allows them to preempt only 15 hours of their regular programming. I can't remember if that was 15 hours per year, or per month, or whatever, but the Ryder Cup runs for 12 hours on Saturday and Sunday. If they preempted even just 3 or 4 hours of it for the Cats game, they would have been "charged" for the entire 12 hours. leaving them only 3 more hours that they could preempt for the remaining time period (I think it was 15 hours for the entire year). So this week was sort of an unusual situation, and they didn't really have any better options. Again, this shouldn't be an issue for any of the remaining games this season. All the others will be on MTN's primary channels across the state, except for the Sac State game on ESPN2.

I have never had a problem watching Bobcat football on the local channel here in Bozeman. Maybe it's time to rethink your choices.

While registering my vehicles the assessor stated "I have had both Cat and Griz students and alums work for me and the Griz end up working under the direction of the Cats."

That makes sense. Thanks for the legwork. Another question is if the Spectrum stations are contractually obligated to air a mediocre Gris team playing a bad Dahl State over the Bobcat game, which has one of the Top 3 teams in FCS against a hot Portland State team. This isn’t 2003 anymore.

You might want to check you schedule, I use Fubo for local channels (similar to YoutubeTV) and I don't see the Cat game this weekend, fortunately I have ESPN+ which is how I usually watch anyway.

I just want to say that if you don't have ESPN+ as a Bobcat fan, you're missing out. Every single conference game and OOC home game is on there, plus many road OOC games (against conferences with a similar deal that the Big Sky has with ESPN+). You also get every other Big Sky teams' games, as well as all of the Big Sky basketball games. It is well worth the money to be able to follow the Cats and the rest of the conference throughout multiple sports on a single app

It's the best thing that's ever happened to me in this life.

I'm going to watch a PSU game or two tonight. The other awesome thing about it is how quickly you can watch or re watch a game, they make it super easy to FF through all the junk and just watch the plays.

Great time to be a BOBCAT!
