A question that is asked a lot but not for awhile is why is it so hard to keep photos and weights updated? Didn’t half the players on the roster have photos at one time but they don’t now? Do the players not like freshman photos? Do you think that happens to be one of those things that’s neglected because of priority of time? People just don’t have enough time to do it. Choate’s first year, the roster got dominated and everybody was updated.
They players photos are still there. Just click on each players name and then click the historical tab

This transfer portal is absolutely just going to ruin teams, not only MSU. Hardly worth recruiting a kid if he has no intention of staying. And unless it's truly an awful situation for a player in a certain program and he needs to leave, I don't think it's going to benefit these guys to bounce around from program to program. Hard to develop as a player doing that, IMHO.

It certainly has the potential to wreak havoc with recruiting budgets.

Definitely going to impact how the team is run and how you recruit. While it has become a new factor in FCS, it appears that the transfers are mostly kids buried on depth charts and are not getting an opportunity to play on the future. It is not established starters looking for an FBS gig. Unfortunately, the portal reflects how society has changed with people requiring immediate gratification and the “what have you done for me lately” generation.

Colter, serious question, is the loss of 16 players in one roster year for a 4th year coach high or about average? That seems like a lot to me, but I’m interested in how that compares with other programs in our conference or nationally. Many folks keep saying the transfer portal is the reason but are other programs seeing this much change as well?

Choate's awful. I'd fire him now.

But in all seriousness, the scholarship freshman kids that have left will have to be examined by Choate and his staff as a part of how they evolve their recruiting strategy. But kids like Todd Payne (PWO last year) were going to have a tough time making the roster this spring. They are a normal part of roster attrition for EVERY college football program each year.

I’m not making this about Choate at all. I actually think he’s a good coach. Simply wanting to know if this attrition is high or average for a coach in his fourth year. I asked Colter because I figured he would have a better feel than most of us with his reporting and connections to big sky programs. The Griz are at 10 players right now so that’s the only other number I’m aware of, granted it’s year 2 of a new staff. Would like to see the numbers for other programs.

Choate has been so aggressive about bringing in more players than he has spots for. Part of that is probably a reaction to the transfer portal but I think it's more about having a highly competitive roster. We say on here all the time that it seems like they are bringing in more recruits than they have spots for, so it stands to reason the "tweener" kids are going to look elsewhere. There have been a few impact players that have left, but so many of them are just seeing the writing on the wall that it's not going to be easy to get a roster spot.

Colter,
Where are you getting your numbers from?
Yes 85 on 63 scholarships.
But 94? Isn't it 95 for preseason camp?
And 104? Isn't it 110 or is 104 Choate's locker limit?
And yes, I posted months ago we would see about 15 leaving before fall. So the numbers are about what I would expect with the influx of talent.
10-2 season and deep run in the playoffs.
um 6-6 and watching the 4th lose.
Idaho ummmm, yeah.....

The past five years MSU has brought in 167 players.
2015 - 33 (Ash)
2016 - 36
2017 - 29
2018 - 32
2019 - 37

167 - 104 = 63 63/5 = 12.6

The previous five years it was 109.
2014 - 23
2013 - 24
2012 - 19
2011 - 22
2010 - 21

109 - 104 = 5. 5/5 = 1.

Big change. I’m not sure the limit is 104. I believe it’s 110, which allows schools to bring in more players. Still a big change in recruiting philosophies.

I think that's a bit extreme. It will change things a bit, and will change recruiting strategies but I doubt it doubt it will "absolutely ruin" any teams. NDSU will still kick everyone's ass, including any time they play FBS schools - and MSU and all other FCS teams will continue to try to knock them off their perch.

I have 12 Griz players on my list (that story is coming soon). I think there are many, many reasons we see these numbers rising at Montana State and other places. I will do a podcast on it next week. The one thing I would say is that Jeff Choate has been very open about staying in the front end of roster news. He announces players retiring and leaving the program before reporters can even break down the roster or the roster is updated. For that reason, I think there's more knowledge about the roster movement at MSU than most schools.
