More bad news for the program... We need an abundance of offensive weapons. Not promising redshirts transferring out.
I agree it sucks losing guys, but if he came in last year and blew the doors off the league, it would be worse. Being a 3 Star WR in a run 1st offense is like being a punter on a team that goes for it on every 4th down. Good Luck Mr. Metcalf. I'm guessing he transfers to UW, just a guess.
Why would he transfer to UW? He didn’t play because he wasn’t ready and guys were ahead of him on the depth chart. Do you really think UW would provide a better chance to get playing time?

Not a lot of True Freshman are going to have noticeable playing time. He was a 3-Star WR out of High School. That alone give's him some credibility. The fact that UW is closer to home, its only a guess on my part. Basically any team that throws the ball more than us is possible place for him to land.
He also didn't have any offers besides us and Eastern if i remember right. He came here more or less because of his high school coach, Joey Thomas.

Metcalf had offers from Idaho, UNI, and Weber according to 247.

3* recruits are a dime a dozen.

He was hardly good enough to play here, he's not going to be good enough to play at UW.

I hate seeing all of the negative comments towards guys who are transferring. They're just kids trying to play the game they love and navigate themselves towards a college education.

What negative comments?

Well calling a guy a dime a dozen and saying he wasn't good enough to play here certainly isn't a positive assessment. You've made it clear you think he is a raw prospect and wasn't good enough as it stands, I just don't see the point of those kinds of comments.

So I can only comment ultra-positive things?

I don't view it as negative, it's just being realistic. If you think that we can only talk about how good players are, well...that's just not real.

It wasn't a slam on the kid at all, just how I view him as a player. I'll proceed to send you a rough copy of all my future posts so you can approve of them, k?

You can comment whatever you want man. Just because I don't like them doesn't mean other people don't. Your post just seemed to be one of the classic "he sucked anyway" posts that happens when a guy leaves the program.

I am curious though as to what led you to make those conclusions, and I am being serious. Have you watched him in practice? Is it because of his size and athleticism that you think he isn't good enough? Most reports I heard throughout fall camp and the season were positive, although there wasn't a whole lot of chatter about him one way or the other.

Let's get some things straight. I don't like to be accused of things I didn't say.

1) I didn't say he sucked. I said he was raw.

2) I didn't say he was a dime a dozen, I said 3*'s are a dime a dozen. Essentially, there's a lot of 3* players out there. It doesn't mean they're good. Doesn't mean they're bad. It just means nothing. It wasn't a comment directed at Mekhi, just a general statement.

3) On tape, I saw a kid who was decently athletic, who had size but didn't play to that size on tape, struggled running routes (rounded a lot of things, not much for pacing it was all one speed), and didn't high point the ball well for his size. Potential is there for sure, but like I said before, raw. That doesn't mean I think he "sucks", just that he had a lot of work to do. So when players like that transfer out, it doesn't bother me very much. It's just normal attrition.

4) I hope he does well wherever he goes. Transfers don't bother me. What Isenhart did doesn't bother me. Coaches leave all the time, but players can't? I don't buy into that mindset like some fans do. Kids should go wherever they can best succeed, just like the coaches do.

How often do players transfer from MSU and go on to have successful careers elsewhere? It doesn’t seem to happen much. I don’t see transfers as a bad sign about a program.

Nice work on the searches. The links prove in recent years, transfers havent done much once they left MSU. I realize some redshirted but none of those stats are mind blowing.

As of right now, Tre'von Strong is the best story.

Nice catch on Hoy. As for Marino, I was going for kids who transferred under Choate's leadership. Marino was under Ash as was Demonte King (quit prior to 2015 season ending).

Demonte had a fantastic finish to his career by the way: https://thesundevils.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5222.

thanks for digging that up, interesting stuff.

One guy I am thinking of in the "moved on and had a big career" category...…. its driving me nuts, but I cant think of his name or the school he transferred to (which really helps narrows it down... ha). Anyway, he was a WR (fairly hyped up recruit, I believe from Oregon), I want to say he was a freshman here around 2010/2011 ish… played in like 1 or 2 games as a freshman or redshirt freshman... then transferred to a school out east I believe, and by the time he was a senior he was one of the leading WR's in the country with some different stats/categories....

anyway, if you can figure out the name of this guy I'm thinking of, kudos to you (its on the tip of my tongue). That is probably the biggest example of a Bobcat I can think of that moved on to a different school (same level as us or higher) and really excelled.

Jordan Hoy (QB) was another one that transferred out (to like 4 different schools, ha) and had some decent success as he moved around.

Be nice to have a system that throws to these WR's...
Yeah, I thought it might hurt our recruiting. I didn't see a WR already on the roster leaving because of our run-heavy offense. Especially since we're a playoff off time still on the rise.

It doesn't seem like a stretch to assume our passing game and offense as a whole have a lot of upside, will continue to get a lot better next year, and we'll ostensibly have a more pass-oriented QB next year.

Maybe he's homesick, or there were other reasons for him transferring.

Within that timeframe, I have no idea who you are talking about. I mean...we got a pretty awesome transfer from Oregon named Elvis.
