This really is not a retoricle question or smack, but can anyone name a QB on any college level that has transfer into a program with only 1 year of elligiblity that has made a significant (all conference etc.) impact on a program. I can not think of one....... but I am a basketball guy!

Did that guy (Blankenship?) from Tulsa that went to EWU a few years ago come in with just one year remaining?

Observer can say for sure, but I believe Blankenship was a 1-yr hit.

Dustin Long, from Sam Houston State, 2004. He only played one year for them, but I would say he did pretty well.

Blankenship was a one year player for EWU. He shared newcomer of the year honors with Lulay. He also had some pretty talented receivers playing for him that year. It was Kimbal's first year and I think Chatman was there as well.

I suspect Swogger will do well for the griz. If they get the transfer WR from UW and the RB/WR from Louisville they could be very good.

GO CATS!!

I wouldnt count on the Louisville kid amounting to much at UM other than a backup to Hilliard if that. Chambers would be a good get for them though.

Back to the original point of this thread, I'd say the odds are stacked against this Swooger kid being anything better than mediocre next year. Not smack against Swooger or UM, just stating that it takes a special kid to transfer to a new environment, a new school, a new system, new teammates, new coaches, everything... and become an immediate success, which is what the Griz need.

The one that pops into my mind was the kid from Florida who transferred to Marshall for his senior season. He along with Randy Moss won the national title over some team I can't remember

That kid was at Marshall for exactly one semester, then he transferred back to Florida to finish school.

Marshall's freshman quarterback from the year before was Chad Pennington. Pennington redshirted then picked up where he left off and led Marshall to 1-A status.

Swogger was interested in YSU because it's close to his home town, MSU because he likes Kramer and his staff, UM because it was closest to his wife. I'm thinking Door #3 is the only option based on who it involves.

But what I really want to know is two things 1) why he doesn't just wrap it all up at WSU. He must be close to graduating, his wife is there, and he's established as a person there or; 2) why he doesn't just bring his wife with him. I assume the latter is because she's in school at WSU and close to graduating, which then reverts me back to 1.

I would think that being in Missoula with a wife in Pullman would be incredibly distracting. He has to learn this offense, get acquainted, etc. etc. all while traveling back-and-forth to WSU during any free time. Or having her travel back-and-forth, which is a bit much to ask or maybe I'm just P-W'd.

Eric Kresser (sp? - too lazy to Google the correct name). I think Moss may have had a slightly bigger impact than Kresser on the title, however. :)

Funny, I can't think of any 1 year transfer QBs who flopped. There aren't very many who wait that long to transfer. Blankenship at EWU was the BSC MVP in his only year.

Sam Houston has had a couple of one-year wonders also. Dustin Long, as previously mentioned, finished 2nd in voting for the Payton award last year. They also had Josh McCown a few years ago who was a Payton finalist and is now in the NFL.

Those are the only 3 one-year transfer QBs I can think of off the top of my head and I'd say all had a significant impact.

Blankenship started three years for Tulsa and came in to mentor Meyer and Allen(Meyers competition). Timm Rosenbach got him to come over so he could get a look see by the scouts. He ended up signing a free agent contract and is currently a Arena League2 QB. He was a true leader and did have Kimble and a record setter in Kyler Randall to throw to, Chatman had left.. One reason Swooger kinda got screwed was Rosenbach recruited Brink and was his boy and when Swooger got hurt Timm sold Doba on his boy. Swooger wants a chance to make it to the League and Kramer, Wulff and the YSU Coach would not guarantee him the starting spot. Hauck was in need of a QB and promised him the spot at the cost of screwing the other QB's on his team...

Hauck did NOT promise Swogger a starting spot.

Swogger:
"They (Montana coaches) told me I'd be the starter going into spring ball," Swogger said in a telephone interview from his parents' home. "But I'm not expecting anything to be given to me."
He WILL be the number one going into spring ball but will be competing for the starting role. Also, a point of clarification - his wife will be graduating this spring from WSU so the distance between them won't be a distraction next season.

So the job is his to lose as opposed to his to win. For a guy who has never set foot on the field in a UM game, that's a pretty strong suggestion from Hauck that he is being given the starting nod.

If Hauck said "Regardless what you do, no matter how bad you are, I put in writing that you will be our starter, then I guess that would be a "promise" of a starting job.

Ok folks let me help you clarify what Hauck and Swogger actually said. This is based on years of listening to to coaches speak.

" Mr. Swogger you will be the best quarterback in the league next year unless one of the other Griz is. Going into spring football you will be the #1 QB on the depth chart along with Washington and Cole. The starting job is yours unless someone else gets it. . In the fall none of the freshmen QB's will play unless Selles starts.

Disclaimer this coach speak is not limited to Hauck I fully except that all coaches to some degree use coach speak.

Didn't Hauck tell Washington about the same thing? We'll see if the fans end up being as excited about Swogger as they were Washington.

i-aa - Like Observer pointed out, Swogger most likely thinks he has some game at the next level, but needs to point it out to pro scouts. He won't get that chance at Wazzu. His best opportunity is at um.

Ryan Fien transferred from UCLA to Idaho in '96 or '97 and did very well for the Vandals.

There has been a number of successful one year QB transfers.

Yup, Blankenship was a one year deal. They did have some good receivers in Randall and Pierce that year. Kimble was a Freshman, but I don't think he was playing at the wide-out position. He was recruited as a running back, and I don't think he switched over until his sophomore year.

Gut shot reaction?

Hauck is hoping for a quickie title from tranfers so he can move to greener pastures.

WR from UW, QB from WSU, RB from Louisville. Dissuade me from this belief. Anyone...?
