Ryan Holmes

The Chronicle is reporting this morning that Ryan Holmes quit the men's basketball team and returned to Phoenix. I had heard that Holmes was the most improved player during the preseason. I think he even started one or two of the early preseason games. Then he was suspended for the Northern Colorado game because of "attitude issues". Now a promising young point guard is gone. I assume he had playing time issues, but does anybody out there know the details?

No details here but the song sure sounds the same...
Good thing we're fully stocked at that position.
Holmes sure looked like he could be a good one.
This whole season has been like a kick to the balls.

We probably should have redshirted Holmes last season. I think everyone was surprised, including coach, that Casey Durham took his minutes. Holmes probably realized that all else being equal the coaches kid is going to get his minutes. Plus in defense of coach-Casey has played better than Holmes for the most part.
It's going to hurt next year when our only returning player with any point guard experience is Casey Durham. I don't think Casey is an all game-all season D-1 point guard-but then Holmes might not have been either.
No worries. I'm sure there's another 6' tall JC three point gunslinger out there.

Wow. I read today's paper and didn't see this at all so I went back to look again. I found the notice in the tiny, tiny print of the "Game Notes" section. I think this is a little more than an "oh, by the way....the kid that initially started the season at point guard and was lauded for incredible off season improvement has left the team" game note. Once again Welsch proves he will do anything to stand behind Mick.

Holmes was not a player!!!! some of you guys think we lost the second coming, Holmes was not going to be in the mix this season anyways. The reason he started early was because of discipline issues to others on the team. People do not need to call Casey Durham "Coach Casey", the kid is leading the team in assists and steals, I do not think holmes was second in either of those stats!!!!

loyal: Thanks for letting us know that one of our few high school recruits (that hadn't already quit) over the last several years wasn't any good. That's really reassuring.
Just so we aren't blindsided by any future defections, who else on the team sucks to the extent that we shouldn't be upset if they quit as well ... or does that sort of wisdom only work in hindsight?

WOW, another player leaving the Bobcats early? I wonder why we have had so many people leave early?
That is very good to hear that we recruited someone who wasn't good enough to play anway.

Does anybody know anything about Holmes' personality or character? Or did he just get homesick? It's troubling to see yet another player walk out of the program, especially one with so much potential on the court. Maybe his personality was harming the team. But yet again, this is not good.

Just to be fair in reflecting on Casey Durham's season so far, it should be mentioned that according to the Stats page on the MSU Bobcat website, Casey is also last on the team, of the top 8 players in minutes played, in field goal percentage overall and the only player among the top 8 with a worse 3 pt percentage is Marvin Moss. Ryan Holmes was ahead of Casey in both of those categories.

He should have had no beef....started most of the year before he left......was given a very fair shot this year......must be some underlying problems with attitude, work ethic, etc.

not a chance he leads the team in either bad shot selection or airballs. i don't know if you haven't seen them, but we have a couple other guards who like to take a few ill-advised shots and sometimes miss everything. it's one of our biggest problems right now. and if you think that the cats are struggling because of caseys play, you don't know anything. sorry. the entire team is playing bad right now so let's lay off one kid huh?

It is our BIGGEST problem....the poor shot selection of our guards, including Casey.....look at his % the last two games.....get real....he is part of the problem.

I think you were responding to my post. Please re-read, I didn't refer to Casey as "Coach Casey". When I said "coach" I was referring to Mick Durham.

ya, i know man. the comment was he LEADS THE TEAM in these things. i responded with the fact that he doesn't, and to LAY OF ONE KID! i'm being real, they ALL have to get better, yet some just point at casey like he is the problem.

I have heard that Holmes was mad about the substitution patterns. Supposedly he was heard a couple of times as he was coming out of the game "F this." Once again another recruit leaving early.....
