TEAM FOCUS
ALBA BERLIN

Hollis Price

It is the start of a new era for Alba Berlin, which really had a busy summer in search of the right players to get back toits otherwise usual spot as the main reference in German basketball at clubs level. Alba did not hesitate to invest in several elite players which will allow the team to fight for every title yet again this season, as well as bouncing back for its ULEB Cup appearance last season in which it won the opening 4 games but went on to lose 6 in a row to miss the elimination rounds. Alba brought back a star power forward like Quadre Lollis, as well as finding an elite guard duo in Mike Penberthy and Hollis Price. Not happy with that, Alba kept center Jovo Stanojevic and surrounded him with solid frontcourt players such as Lollis, Stephen Arigbabu or Nenad Canak, and also inked Demond Greene, who helped the German national team to win the silver medal at EuroBasket 2005 along with Arigbabu. Players like Matej Mamic or Martynas Mazeika add depth to a solid roster which in former Alba legend Henrik Rodl returns as the team head coach.

2005-06 Roster
Name Pos.
MAMIC, Matej F
MAZEIKA, Martynas G
STANOJEVIC, Jovo C
PENBERTHY, Mike G
LOLLIS, Quadre F
CANAK, Nenad F
GREENE, Demond G
LEUTLOFF, Sascha F
ZWIENER, Philip F
KULAWICK, Robert G
PRICE, Hollis G
ARIGBABU, Stefan C
Coach: RODL, Henrik
Alba Berlin needed a playmaker and found one in Price, a pass-first point guard and a very reliable player in critical situations. His speed and court sense will be the perfect complement for Penberthy, a scoring machine who arrives from Napoli. Penberthy, a combo guard who can fire in one three-pointer after another, was the ULEB Cup second top scorer last season by averaging 22.1 points, which proves he will be the defensive target for every Alba opponent. Greene, a physical guard with good jumping skills, will provide intensity, defense and athleticism off the bench. Mamic will likely start at the small forward spot. He is a good shooter, as well as the kind of players who does a little bit of everything at both ends to make his team win, such as rebounding, finding the open man or playing aggressive defense. Mazeika is a combo guard with great ballhandling and driving skills who will provide intensity off the bench, while youngsters Philup Zwiener and Robert Kulawick will have to fight hard to earn some playing time during the season. 2004-05

Lollis helped Alba to win the last of the seven consecutive German League titles and is back to bring his team back to the glory days. An aggressive rebounder in both ends, Lollis can also score in many ways, as he has an effective mid-range jumper and knows how to find his way to the basket from the high post, too. Stanojevic, a talented center, will start his fourth season with the team. He averaged 19.1 points on 58-for-104 shooting in 10 ULEB Cup games last season. Stanojevic is a high post player who can take the mid-range jumper or drive to the rim with the same effectivity. Canak will give Alba somefrontcourt depth, as well as some experience, as this versatile forward already reached the ULEB Cup final with Makedonikos last season. He can be unstoppable in one-on-one situation due to his talent and speed. Arigbabu is a pure center who can take the occasional long jumper, but who in mainly known for being a physical presence in the paint. He already played for Alba in the late nineties. It has been only two years since Alba lost its German League domination, but it must have looked like a long time for the fans at Max-Schmelling Halle, who see basketball as a celebration in one of the wildest atmospheres in Europe. All they want is to see Alba be challenging for every title. With a reloaded, talented roster, everything is possible this season. 2005-06 ULEB Cup

Does anybody know of any other Cats playing overseas?

The only person that comes to mind is Aaron Rich. He was playing in Hungary a few years ago. He played one year and was offered a contract for a second year. But I'm sure if he is still playing now.
