Cut Bank QB
Does anyone have any up to date information on Larsen from Cut Bank? Has he made up his mind yet? I am just curious as I haven't heard anything on him for a while.

Re: Cut Bank QB
I think we're looking at him as a TE...from what I've heard the home visit didn't go well...whatever that means! Maybe he was insulted that we didn't look at him as a QB.CARDIAC_CATS wrote:Does anyone have any up to date information on Larsen from Cut Bank? Has he made up his mind yet? Not a lot of to hang this one on, but a Griz friend of mine claims Hauck "stole one" Larsen from the Cats with a "no scholarship " offer (Grey Shirt)CARDIAC_CATS wrote:Does anyone have any up to date information on Larsen from Cut Bank? Can anyone tell mewhat Kramer is thinking? Why wouldn't you look at this kid as a QB? He has excellent size and I don't think Desin can be a D-I QB, although I hope he can. We have enough young tight ends already for crying out loud. With Barnhart, Schreibeis, Bostick, McDonald, Parker, Ouilhon, I think we'll be okay at that position.

Not exactly, my good friend Mslacat. A greyshirt is a DELAYED scholarship agreement. He could be on scholarship as early as January, 2007 instead of August 2006. And he would not be allowed to enroll as a full-time student until that January.mslacat wrote:Not a lot of to hang this one on, but a Griz friend of mine claims Hauck "stole one" Larsen from the Cats with a "no scholarship " offer (Grey Shirt)CARDIAC_CATS wrote:Does anyone have any up to date information on Larsen from Cut Bank? You can't be a full time student if you are grey shirting? Are you sure about that?Lydell wrote:Not exactly, my good friend Mslacat. A greyshirt is a DELAYED scholarship agreement. Yes, sir. I got that info directly from a person who went through the greyshirt process himself, Justin Hartman. He said he HAD to enroll as a part-time student (or not go to college at all) that 1st fall following graduation. I think the concept is that if you enroll as a full-time student, then the NCAA says your 5-year eligibility clock has started, which defeats the whole purpose of trying to delay your eligibility period. Then you are back to the ol' standard redshirt scenario.wbtfg wrote:You can't be a full time student if you are grey shirting? So to avoid the NCAA rules in place, people have devised the greyshirt scheme which appears to encourage kids to waste their first semester (or partially waste their first semester) of school?
It maybe makes sense if they are ones who will struggle with school and need to ease into it slowly, but if a kid is a decent to good student, it seems pretty silly.
So I guess my next question is, who do we blame for this? The NCAA who put the 5 year eligibility rules in place, or the schools who use this work-around to skirt the NCAA rules to the detriment of the student?

Re: Cut Bank QB
So let me get this straight. If a kid greyshirts then he doesn't receive any scholarship money for at least the first semester, and isn't guaranteed anything for the spring. The kid isn't able to practice, attend meetings, lift with the team, or be on the sidelines. He cannot be a full time student during the first semester, and therefore isn't able to receive any financial aid. Also, it is possible that the kid may have to red shirt that first year making it 2 full years where he will not see any gametime, or make any trips with the team.Lydell wrote:Yes, sir. Unless the kid has an injury or academic issues, I can't imagine why anyone would want to do this.

I agree completely, but I don't know if his size can carry him in the BSC. I hope he does a good job here and my best wishes go to his success.CatGrad00 wrote:Don't underestimate Desin......he has potential to be another Dave Dickinson. You got it, BAC. I could be wrong, but I don't think the NCAA intended for this to happen. This smells of colleges "coming up with a loophole" in the regs. I read the sports pages pretty closely, and I sure don't remember the NCAA making some great pronouncement that they were condoning the great benefits of "the greyshirt process." Maybe I missed it. Let's face it. Ethically it should be used sparingly. Guys like John Cahill from West who basically needed 4 years to rehab a rare but debilitating knee condition ( he lost his last 2 years of HS) benefitted greatly from the greyshirt. And it was a win-win for him and the college. Generally guys want to keep playing and continue to get on with their lives. That's how I see it.

Interesting...Krames is again letting honesty get in the way of ethics.
Hauck probably said, "oh, ya, you'll compete for the QB job (see Selle) - for sure, for sure." While Krames said, "ya know, we think you'll be successful at [position x], given your size, strenght and speed. We will offer you [X] scholarship."
Hauck apparently has run out of partial scholarship money, and is now giving scholarships on credit (which is basically what a grey shirt offer is). The recruit gets to spend a bunch of time and money at a campus while waiting for a potential scholarship. As far as I know, there is no guarantee of scholarship money for a grey shirt who subsequently begins his/her eligibility.

Stay at home for harvest? I thought getting out of staying home for harvest was the reward for graduating from high school and going off to college!Lydell wrote:He doesn't have to go to school in the fall and spend all that money. Fun to speculate though on the coaches' rhetoric. We all do lots of that.
Okay, so I was never a very good farmboy.

I am told that the Griz have only 10-11 "full" scholarships to work with this year. That is going to limit the number of scholarship offers they will have this winter. With all of the transfers I read they will sign on EgrizLydell wrote:Not exactly, my good friend Mslacat. A greyshirt is a DELAYED scholarship agreement. Oh, ya, I'm sure he'll stay in Cut Bank. Putting words in coaches' mouths, in this case, was just too easy to pass up!Lydell wrote:He doesn't have to go to school in the fall and spend all that money. Actually if he's a farmboy, he can stay home for one more fall harvest. Dad will like that!!

Don't be too sure we were going after Larson all that hard. I'm not sure if he has been offered anything by MSU, and I know that the coaches didn't feel their home visit went very well (not sure what that means?). If this situation ends up playing out like you have outlined, I certainly wouldn't say the griz stole a recruit from under our noses. This is one case where I honestly think that if he doesn't come to MSU, it is because our coaches decided that they didn't want him bad enough to spend a lot of time recruiting him. Personally, I would like to see him become a Bobcat, because I think he has lots of potential. Still, it is always going to be hard to project how a kid will turn out at the Division I-AA level when he has been playing against Class B competition his whole life.mslacat wrote:I am told that the Griz have only 10-11 "full" scholarships to work with this year. The point my friend was making, was that the Griz have a commitment (although he is not one of my better sources and I will not vouch for this rumor) from a player the Cats were after and offered, and it did not even cost the Griz one of there limited scholarships. Kind of trying to rub my nose in it.
