06 Wide Receiver Corp

Post by 2Cats » Wed Nov 30, 2005 5:00 pm

We've all read with great interest the latest postings about Swogger, Carpenter, Coppek and the young man from U of H. Given those QB's currently on the roster and the potential for transfers, I feel confident that whoever steps on the field in the fall MSU will be equal or better than other teams at that position.

My biggest concern is the WR position. With the possible exception of Mike Brown, I feel like the cupboard is bare in terms of game breaking receivers (sans Murry, Gatewood, et al). This may be an unfair statement as the younger kids have not had much opportunity to show their stuff.

The following list of returning players was taken from this years roster. Interestingly enough these players are either true freshmen or redshirt freshmen

Matt Crane
Mike Van Gorden
Derek Green
Toby Rundell
Nolan Lee
Alex Lourdeaux
Mike Brown
Tyler Lulay

What do we know about them in terms of speed, hands, coachability, etc.? Has anyone heard anything about transfers?

The paper said something about the possibility getting a transfer WR from UNLV. His name is Donnell Wheaton. Don't worry, Kramer will come through with something.

Here is a link to his profile.

You should add Roosevelt who will be a senior. A lot of people are down on him, but I'm not. He has very good speed, could be a return guy, and I think could be a sleeper here. I like the guy. No matter the negative stuff, I can see him playing. (Eddie S was being knocked going into his senior year and way down the depth charts, Roosy is the same, except faster).

I still like Roosevelt as well but I think Green is going to be "the man" by the time he graduates. I only saw him in scrimmages but was very impressed.

Rundle had a couple big scrimmages, though it was second team action.

I hope some of the taller guys can make an impact, we never seem to field any tall guys, with the exception of Guinn.

Toby Rundle and Derek Green will be key. I also like Mike Brown and I think he will be a big contributer. I also agree with your assessment of Roosevelt.

I have an unconfirmed report that Roosy had his scholarship pulled.

Brown will be good, Green is very green and we'll just have to wait on him. Lulay's got the best hands of the group - reminds one of Turnquist (who I would have traded for several games last year). Nolan Lee never made it out of fall camp. Toby could be better than most think. Don't worry though, Krames will find some guys. I for one thought last years group never played to their potential, sometimes they did'nt play even close. This year we could be better when all is said and done.

Kramer made a comment about Green and Brown being the only young WR's that he is excited about at this time (things can change). I would think Lulay would be good. I was talking to some of the parents before the Cat/griz game and I think it was Ione's that said Tyler is a better athelete than Travis (according to Travis) and will be very good.

Seems like the wrong time of year to pull someone's scholarship. They can only pull it for next year, not for the remainder of this year. Also, it affects the entire team now emotionally. You don't want to drop one shoe, then another a couple of weeks later, then another again later, you want them at once to get over it (if it does happen). If you did it just before Xmas, might make more sense, but more likely after spring practice you know what you have and such. They should have a good number of scholarships going into the signing period (with the number of seniors this year).

Also, Roosey will be a senior, that doesn't happen often that you pull a senior that has been at the school for that long. Not saying it may not be true. but I hope not and doesn't make sense. We'll see I guess.

I thought I would also add my feelings that this type of comment ("unconfirmed" that ...) can be extremely hurtfull if Brandon, his family, and/or friends read this. It puts them on the defensive and uncertain. I wish it had never been made. Wait on something like this until it is certain (at the least!!). My two cents

There is also another potential option for 06. Kramer has made it known that he would love to see Nick Dissly come play Football for him.

I couldn't agree more. I don't think he will fill Ricky's shoes but he can be a solid contributor. His speed alone is worth keeping around - and I think he should be our kickoff return man again. Austin stepped up near the end of the season on punt returns but Brandon would be fine on kickoffs. We did nothing this season in that area.

I heard Wheaton was on campus this weekend. Anyone have information on his visit or information on anyother potential WR recuit

I heard from a VERY reliable source that Desin will not redshirt this year and they will give him the opportunity to compete for the QB position but ultimately would like to see him at slot receiver. We'll see.

That is very interesting. Does this mean Kramer is not planning on getting the QB transfer he wants this year? We'll see.

I hope he sticks at qb, he won't compete for a starting spot at slot anyway and we need to groom a young qb, if not him then someone else.

It has been confirmed from a VERY reliable source that Roosevelt has had his scholarship pulled. He wasn't that good anyway. I will admit he was very fast, but as a reciever you MUST catch the ball. Also I think he had some chip on his shoulder, thats the word.

Steve Heberly the MSU track star would be a great pick-up at reciever. The kid is the fastest guy the state has ever scene and he was a good football player in high school. But not likely to move over to the football program, just a thought.

Yes Steve Heberly would be very fast on the field. The better option would be to have Dan Johnson, who is the 2nd fastest on the track team play WR. He is 6'2" or so compared to Heberly's 5'10" or so.
