Sounds like a good player, good student, and good citizen.
He'd be a good get for us, or anyone else for that matter.
Kramer...go get him.

It says that he got a 26 on the SAT. Now it has been a few years, but I am pretty sure that on the SAT, the top score is a 1600 and on the ACT the top score is a 36. I am pretty sure they meant the ACT and not the SAT, otherwise that means the kid can't even spell his name because you get at least 100 points for that

Good catch. When I read it, my brain "saw" ACT even though it read SAT.
Yeah, a 26 on the ACT is a bit more plausible ... especially if he got a 4.0 (or anything over a 1.0, for that matter).

Regardless of the error (please God let it be an error) in the article, we would be well off to get him. I remember us getting one other MT Gatorade player of the year and it turned out well for us then too, she came in the form of Miss Kamber Kelly and I'm sure none of you can forget her.

The SAT was 1600 max, now it is 2400. Previously there were 2 sections (Math and English stuff) each valued at 200 to 800. Giving a minimum score of 400 for just showing up for the test. and 1600 for a stud.
The new SAT has 3 sections: critical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and writing skills. Each again having 200 to 800, for a minimum of 600 and a Max of 2400. As a note, 500 is considered average in each section.
The ACT is 1 to 36. 20 is about average (as 1000, or now 1500 is for the SAT). 26 is about the 85th percentile nation wide (not bad). That is 85th percentile for the people taking the ACT test (or people wanting to go to college). If everyone in the nation were to take the test, this percentile would be higher because it would then include people that have no desire and capability to go to college. However, it does not also include some of the brighter kids that only take the SAT because they are going for the top universities (Ivy's, Stanford, Harvey Mudd, Cal, MIT).
Is this Verlanic related to our probable starting OL Center next year? Drummond and Anaconda are only about 60 miles apart.

Ty O'Conor was MT Gatorade player of the year, and he was a very good DT for the Cats.

As far as basketball goes, MSU has had a lot of Gatorade Players of the Year. It seems like we got the men's basketball POY every year for a time in the 1990s. Names like Leachman, Sullivan, Sprinkle, Conway, and now Dissly. The 2005 Montana Gatorade women's basketball player of the year was Jenny Heringer, who is now wearing the Blue and Gold. So MSU has had a lot of great luck with Montana's Gatorade Players of the Year.

Yes they were. I thought that list was too short. Thanks rtb.

I'd do well to mention my home-boy John Lazosky as another Gatorade POY that followed the light. Seems like West High put out some outstanding bballers in the '90's. Doug Robison is a great HS coach.

ECG do you mean U of Michigan??? Miami?? Minnesota?? Surely not the dance school located in western Montana that recently made it out of fourth tier status as reported by U.S. News & World Report, a liberal news magazine. Now we know why you live in New Jersey.

Thank you for adding UM to my ramble, but unlike the Ivy's that require 1500+ to even be considered and more likely 1550+ with outside interests, I think UM takes 800 as a good score (minimum NCAA atheltic requirement) with Pizza Delivery on the job resume as a major plus. :
Actually, I like serious informative threads and tend to dislike the constant desire by some to just disrupt a great thing like Verlanic getting this award. Having brains and hard work like he has exhibited is something great, and should not be made lite of and I fell to the same level.

I wasn't making light of it. It is a very prestigious honor to be awarded with and my congratulations go out to Mr. Verlanic. Now all he has to do to up his respect in my book is to come to MSU.

we can blame the substandard for that one...

I think we really need to work hard at signing young Mr. Verlanic. He is the type of kid that has the work ethic and toughness (being a 3 time state champ enforces that successful attitude) that will make a huge difference in the trenches. Afterall, that's where the CATS issued an old fashion fanny whipping to the griz this year. Alex, you will do the same at MSU my friend. Maintain the family legacy

GO CATS!!

Just ask his cousins Joey and Jim to recruit. They both go to MSU.
