big sky power rankings from the missoulian

Post by mslacatfan » Tue Oct 04, 2005 10:06 am

Power rankings from article in the missoulian:

1 Montana St. (3-2): Bobcats have defeated two straight nationally-ranked foes. Can Travis Lulay continue his magic at Weber?

2 Montana (3-1): Freshman QB Cole Bergquist makes his first start at ISU. It won't be a picnic.

3 E. Wash (2-2): Eagles breathe sigh of relief after avoiding 0-2 Big Sky start.

4 Idaho St. (3-2): Narrow MSU loss leaves Bengals in must-win situation against Griz.

5 Weber St. (2-3): Wildcats' improvement evident in close loss at Montana.

6 Portland St. (3-2): Impotent passing attack leaves PSU vulnerable.

7 Sac St. (1-4): Hornets lead league in turnover margin.

8 N.Arizona (2-3): NAU is in a world of hurt.

Would ya look at this!!! Couple comments: First off our own god damn newspaper cant even give the cats the credit they deserve, they haven't ranked the cats #1 once this year, it says a lot about the cats if the missoulian is willing to rank them #1!!! Second off, I cant believe how many cat fans I've seen throughout different posts not giving the cats the respect they deserve!!!

Finally the cats are getting some respect from missoula, how bout we give them a little more respect from our hometown!

When someone else talks you up, it is called praise. When you choose not to talk yourself up, it is called humility.

I'm not sure if that applies to this situation, but it may. I personally don't see a problem with Cat fans stopping short of declaring the Bobcats the best at anything, but rather just cheering their arses off for them and letting the Cats' performance on the field speak for itself. Three straight sell-outs tells me that this is exactly what Bobcat Nation is doing, and it's awesome!

Hey don't get me wrong, I know that bobcat nation fans are GREAT fans! Probably the best around! I just feel that sometimes the cats have not got the respect and credit they deserve this year, thats all. They are having an AMAZING year, and me personally, well I've been talking them up more than ever. An I see nothing wrong with that.

One game at a time and we will gain the respect we deserve. I actually like flying under the radar a little bit when it comes to polls. The Weber game this week is a huge game for us. We haven't won a game on the road for quite a few games so this game is CRUCIAL to see how the Cats respond (i.e. respect will go up even further). We have been doing the one thing they need to do though so far this year. TAKE CARE OF YOUR HOME GAMES (Win every one and that is 6 wins right there). We NEED this one on the road this weekend though. Weber seems to be Jeckyl and Hyde type of team. I hope we get the team that NDSU whooped up on this week.

Nothing wrong with talking up your team, even when they're 0-11; support is one reason why we've gotten better.

BUT, there's also nothing wrong with identifying your weaknesses/problem areas in the hope of improving those portions of your team. We all know the "perfect game" doesn't happen often, but everyone should always be working toward that goal, each & every week; even us fans!

Right now, because our Defense is wounded and because we have given up a lot of yardage, I don't feel that we would be favored to beat Eastern at their place; that's why I put them ahead of us in my Big Sky Power Poll. I think we are the ONLY Big Sky team left (ISU being the other, and the Bengals DID pull off the W) with enough firepower to out-shoot them, but right now, I don't think we'd stop them enough to win. Hopefully, over the next month or so, we'll get those key kids back AND we'll start to adjust to & shore up the 3-4 defense so that we CAN beat a team as potent as Eastern.

Hey mslacatfan I couldn’t agree with you more. I think our fans and local media are a little pessimistic. I know that the Cats fell apart on us last year and that has made us a little gun shy, but we really do have a good team. Honestly our wins have been the MOST impressive in the conference. All opponents we have played in 1-AA are currently ranked in the top 30 and we have a 3-1 record against them. The Cats are playing great, and should get the recognition that is associated with their play. How can everyone pick the Griz over the Cats? They have beaten NO ONE yet everyone thinks they are the best team in the conference. I for one look at how a team is playing currently, not how they played last year- especially going into the 6th week. The Cats are #1 right now, and our fans and local media should realize that!

Two big road games coming up. Good teams can win on the road and I expect the Cats to do that the next 3 weekends. Our offense is getting better and better right now and you can slowly see it starting to get into last years form. Our defense overall is better than last year I think (even though a different type style). If we can get our running game going and keep our D off the field as much as we can we should be in great shape this year (and get some of our banged up guys back). Hopefully we will be at FULL strength after the BYE week going into our HOME STRETCH of games. These next 2 road games are VERY VERY KEY games.

my thoughts:
1) I feel something special in this team. Every week about Thursday, I start getting all twisted inside and have a hard time focusing on issues outisde of the 'Cats game that Saturday. I feel this team can win the NC. I'm glad we're not peaking yet; as long as we play well enough to win and keep on improving.

2) That being said, the Cal Poly game takes me in two directions. One is, will we see that MSU team again this year? Or, was it truly a learning experience for everyone and they will use it to motivate themselves to play hard every down all game long every weekend.

3) I think some more light on this subject will be shed after this weekend when we face a Weber team who used the pass effectively last weekend against the Griz. This will be a therrmometer as to what to expect in the EWU. At this point, I see it as a shootout, similar to last year's game in Bozeman, where the last team with the ball probably wins.

4) Attn: Bobcat football players reading this, get off of this site. This is what old people like us do; we analyze and re-analyze every possible thing about you guys. You should be focusing on game film, preparing yourself mentally, and getting the job done in the classroom. Take it one game at a time! :D

There is no such things a easy road game in the BSC. It's going to be the team that wins on the road that shows there mettle in the BSC. We had a tough time at Cal Poly...now it's time to go down to WSU and face a pesky Wildcat team...win down there and we can start laying claim to that #1 power ranking.

You are right barechestcat...this team has a buzz about them that you don't feel very often. I'm glad you can wait until Thursday for your stomach to rumble because I'm humming the fight song on Monday morning's when I wake up and am ready for the game come Tuesday night :-)
