Ex-Griz arrested on meth charge

Post by iaafan » Mon Jun 14, 2004 11:20 pm

Apparently a similar arrest was botched recently and the judge had to drop most of the charges. Her's the story re: Peeples

This is absolutely terrible. This drug is a scourge on our state, and most likely our country. It sickens me whenever I here stories like this.
I hope Peeples can get his life turned around.

Sorry for the mini-rant.....I get so angry when I hear about folks that choose drugs over their families and careers. (and yes, I do have a personal experience with a close friend who made these same wrong choices)

This is not a Griz bashing post, because as I have said before this type of thing does and
will continue to happen across the board at all colleges nation wide.

Talk to your children. Peeple was held up a couple years ago as someone who stood up
against the temptation of quick money schemes of drugs and violent acts. He joined the
marines then went onto JR. college and eventually to UM and was held up in the news
papers and game announcers over and over again. Now we find it was mostly BS.
Whether college and Pro athletes want to admit it they are role models. Stories like these
happen all too regularly. As parents we really need talk to our children about these
athletes, pop stars or what ever and convince them that some times the stories we here are
not always true and some times our stars fall. The stories are good, even if the outcome
is not.
For me the star was Michael Ray Richardson. I remember sitting on the porch of a
friends many times and M R R would come on over and we would talk with him for a
while. I thought the world of him. Then one day my Mom, who was in retail, sat me
down and told me some M.R.R. stories from her side (read adult) and M R R got away
with quite a few transgressions at the old Missoula Mercantile store because, the then
store manager, was a huge basketball fan. I never really stopped routing for M R R and
he continued to let me down over and over, but I also feel after that talk with my mom I
looked at him more as a person than a "star" or “role model”.

sounds like your mom was the best role model. parents or older brothers and sisters should be role models, not athletes. charles barkley was correct.

Well said hokeyfine. We all need to remember that we are (or should be) role models for someone. If everyone did that......

It is sad about Peeples, but I have very little sympathy for him if he was dealing that crap to anyone, much less kids. Similar to OB, I hope they throw the book at him if that is the case.

Exactly! I'm glad you said that, I was thinking the same thing. I specifically remember the interview with Barkley where he said that. He also went on to say "I drink, I like to drink, and I'm going to continue to drink!" One of my all-time favorite sports-star lines. It always cracks me up when people say that famous people like Barkley, etc. should always be model citizens because young people look up to them. So... Charles Barkley can't go out and party it up when he wants because he's good at basketball? Tangent here, but obviously the Peoples, Obrien sutuations are much different due to the dealing, coaching position (In Obrien's case), small children involved...

I agree that the ultimate responsibility for being role model are parents. That said though
why does Barkley, Jordan, Shaq, LaBron etc. make all the money they do. Why do they
get paid multi-millions for shoe contracts if they are not playing off their popularity.
Rock stars, athletes, actors, and all , all get paid an extreme amount of money, and they
get paid that money because people like ourselves pay to "watch" them. These highly
paid folks in my opinion can not just have the benefits with out the consequences. We
are past the days of Havlachek and Johnny Bench where they make maybe twice to three
times the average persons pay check. These guys are now averaging 2 mil a year for an
average player, and the elite will make more on endorsements than playing.
I believe parents SHOULD have the ultimate responsibilities as role models.
But athletes and stars are copping out if they do not take the responsibility for being role
models, if they weren't they sure would not be making the 10 of millions $$$ they do.

It doesn't matter whether athletes like Barkley think they are role models or not, they are role models. It's up to them if they want to be good or bad ones. They may not have signed up for that status but it's there. It's still the responsiblity of the parents, but in many cases high profile athletes have just as much influence on young children these days.

kinda sad if a pro athlete is more of a role model than a parent. i like bac's mom, she sounds like a classy lady. too bad parents are so afraid to talk to their kids. sometimes they tend to be a little uptight and not able to say penis and vagina to their kids.

We pay to watch them play their respective sports, because they are able to do things on the court\course\field that very few people can do. They reach the outer limits of what is humanly possible. I don’t think we have the right to tell them how to live their lives when they are off the court, etc. Doesn’t mean I condone rape or adultery or meth or gambling or alcohol abuse, etc. However it is their choice. Yes, they are inherently role models and it is up to them to be good ones or bad. If you don’t like the way a player acts, out of the sport, don’t watch them, and don’t let your kids watch them either. Sometimes, if things get bad enough, their sponsors may even actually drop them… Don't tell them they can't drink though... :o

See, I'm not all that bad. Come to think of it, back in 1986 or 87, I was actually rooting for the Bobcats when they played St. John's in the NCAA tournament. They should have won. Remember Ferch's dunk?

Don't get me wrong, I'll use this against you if we argue in the future. 8)

I would never tell anyone they could not drink, sew their wild oats, but if you are making
money off of "fame" then do not whine when you are criticize for disappointing your
fans. Whether they want to be or whether we want them to be they are role models.
Why does Michael Jordan still get $100,000 dollar speaking fees, it is not because he is a
world class great speaker, or Vin Diesel $5 mil a movie, I can guarantee you it is not
because he is one of the top actors in his field. How about Kobe, once the rape
allegations were filed what happen to his endorsement deals? They dropped him like a
hot potato his "image" was no longer the corporate presence that McDonalds and Coke
wanted to portray. Is not that the pure definition of role model.
I just hate the Barkley line "I am not a role model" yes Charles you are, good or bad, big
or small , what you do effect people right or wrong, and you are being paid quite well to
be one. Your face was plastered over every basketball related product and then some
during your time.
Now if some athlete like Charles said I do not want to be a role model and renounce all of
their endorsement deals and Just play basketball for the sake of basketball for lets say
$250,000 (still damn good money for un-educated laborer) I might think about it.
Take responsibility for your action both good and bad, there are plenty of ditch diggers
and roofer that would be more than willing lives with you for this small cost.

sad thing is, that is actually a picture of me. The good thing is, I was first runner-up at our annual trailer park hunk-of-the-month contest.

If I take in a Bobcat football game, I'll wear my State shirt so's I'll be easy to spot.
