Our history used to be on the MSU website, along with all the individual records for virtually all the sports. Does the lack of data have anything to do with the NCAA limit to 208 pages?

...and I apologize, I have an old media guide someplace with all of the history and the reason our little aggie school chose the Bobcat as a nickname--just not here right now.

All I know is the 'Golden Bobcats' won the national BB championship 1928-1929. My guess is somewhere between the end of WWI and then. :?:

According to 2001 media guide I have: In 1918, the nickname "Bobcats" was adopted by consensus for the school's athletic teams.

Thanks. I really enjoy history so I have been reading old microfilm in the library. In 1912 the Missoulian referred to us as Aggies, and also "The Farmers." Their team was referred to as the Varsity, with no mention of the Grizzlies. In the articles there is a distinct tone of Missoula superiority with regards to the rivalry. Also, a lot of excuses seemed to follow a win by "Bozeman." MSC won the track dual in Missoula that year, before more than 1000 spectators. The Chronicle article that followed was fun to read. "From the minute the first news of the result came over the wire to the Chronicle office and was sent out over the city the joy of the college people knew no bounds." Another account included the burning of the city street boardwalks during the celebration.

There were several Missoula articles leading up to the meet, and a comment about the football game that didn't happen in 1911. "Fate prevented the varsity football team from showing the Bozeman people how little they know about the game." It's interesting how far back the attitudes go, and how they persist.

I don't know when we became the Fighting Bobcats, but I emphasize the Fighting part to my athletes. For some reason, it was added to our name, and I think that it is still as relevant today. If we want respect, we aren't going to win or lose without a fight. I suspect that we were in UM's shadow, and still are to some people.

Mike

It's funny you should mention track and Missoula. Missoula used to have a huge track meet each year for 'Varsity day, when all the high schoolers would come to Missoula for track meet and other interscholastic competitions.

Check out some of the old time football records. Those 'Varsity boys of Missoula couldn't handle the awesome football power of Butte Business College.

Yes UM hosted the annual Interscholastic meet for a long time. In 1912 it hosted the ninth annual meet. That's where a lot of the spectators for the dual came from. The Interscholastic meet was held the day after the dual.

I think that was also around the time the Varsity beat the Farmers from Bozeman something like 79-0

Going into the 1912 season the Farmers and the Varsity were locked up 7-7-2.
Also, I seriously doubt a Butte Business College student ever put on pads. When it was game time the coach just went up to Kelly's Tavern, rounded up a truck full of "Rowdy Boys" fresh off the boat from Dublin and headed for the field to kick some college boy arse.
