Basketball recruiting for 2005-06

OK I was thinking I would get a little break from recruiting but the Basketball boy's are not stopping. This will be my on going thred for the next year.

It is April of 2005 and already we have a commitment for the 2006-07 team. 6-9 Travis Derochowski of Western Mennonite High School in Salem, Ore.. It doesnot stop there. Durham and Johnny Brown (Carson may have been with them I just do not know) made the AAU rounds the last two week ends checking out 2005-06 players Carson and Brown have been recruiting /watching this last winter. One of those was Derochowski of course, but I understand they offered a few other players over the two week -ends. I have heard that 6-2 guard Bryant Williams from Minneapolis North in Minnesota was offered. Williams has been playing behind a very good player, and has been kind-of one of those hidden gems/ sleepers as coaches like to put it. Last week end at the Kingwood Classic in Houston, his AAU team had to play without its star player Isaiah Dahlman ( Michigan, Minnesota, Boston College, Georgia Tech etc. are recruiting Dahlman) who was home with strep throat. Bryant Williams stepped out of back ground and led their AAU team to a couple pretty impressive wins. He is a typical MSU undersized guard. MSU offered after the Las Vegas AAU tourney and before the Houston tourney. After the Houston tourney though the kid is on the radar of quite a few more teams now. Some one needs to buy the coaches a batch of cookies for all of the Hard work they are doing.

BTW: The Griz are desperatly tring to sign a Point guard for next season, but it seems every player they bring in signs some where else. They still have two scholarships to fill for this coming season and we are fillinf spots for next. I LIKE THAT

Mslacat- I guess I have to come over here to find you! :) Are the GRIZ out of the running for Barksdale and Nicks? Have they made any attempts at Junior Russell? What elso do you know about their current recruiting activities?

Nicks is still unsigned, and is a good possiblity. Had a nice year, but a lot of larger programs have backed off because of his size listed as 5-7 to 5-9. With his jets I personally have no problem with a 5-9 point guard in the Big Sky. Last I heard Idaho and Montana were the leaders, but Wyoming, Denver, Louisiana-Laf. and Western Kentucky have all offered Nicks and Fresno State made a very late push once their new coach came on board.

Junior Russell is interesting. I have heard rumblings / rumors that the Griz either should or are looking at him, but actually nothing to indicate whether they are or not. A lot of boosters are talking that he is a real possiblity, but no one can tell me if Kysco is actually looking at him. It would though be real intersting to sign 3 player frim the same school in the same year. I do not remember that happening by any school at any level.

BTW Since i posted the the first comment here I have been told by a friend that Kryco and company may actually have an athlete signed but will not announce it until he fills both scholarships. She did not say highschool or jc or position.

A possible two sport athlete

Image
Campbell one of the top two-sport athletes in AZ

Without a doubt one of the top athletes in the state that made a huge name for himself this past year is Sunnyslope junior TJ Campbell. At 5-10, 170-pounds, this super two-sport athlete put up some big time numbers on the football field and on the basketball court.

During his football season he had 29 receptions for 572 yards and 6 TDs, along with 33 carries for 298 yards and 8 TDs. After a strong football season Campbell took his athletic abilities to the hard wood and helped lead the Vikings to and incredible run at state all the way to the semi-finals where they lost a heart breaker to Santa Rita from Tucson.

Campbell is a powerful athlete that exhibits speed and quickness on the court, with the ability to break down a defender and penetrate at will. He has a good eye for the court and is a complete team player.

Currently Campbell is playing club ball for the Arizona Saints, coached by John Ortega. Recently Campbell started receiving interest from William & Mary and Utah State during the Las Vegas Showcase in April. According to Ortega, William & Mary came out to see Jim Casey and they where in the stands when Campbell scored 33 points, had 8 assists, and 4 steals against the Utah Dynasty.

The William & Mary scout came to their next two games after that and said they were impressed by Campbell and were happy to hear he carries a 3.5 GPA.

Following that at the Las Vegas Extravaganza Montana State was at the first three games the Saints played and expressed interest in Campbell as well as Wilson Bibleheimer from Desert Vista.

The Montana State scout like Campbell's strength on defense and was very impressed by his ability to get to the line. He leads the Saints in free throws attempts per game at just under 10.

Campbell has expressed interest in staying close to home, and has mentioned he received a letter from ASU for football and might try and walk on for basketball.

So far this year interest has come from Harvard, Portland State, Navy, and Colgate for basketball.

Campbell has received interest in football from Brown, Utah, Cornell, ASU, Navy, Columbia, and NAU.

We'll keep you posted on this top athlete from Arizona as the summer winds down.

Team Phoenix takes the Southwest Showcase
ArizonaVarsity.com

The Southwest Showcase 4th Annual Summer Classic was held this weekend at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. Congratulations to Ron Coleman for putting on a first class event. A very talented and scrappy Southwest Rebels team defeated the Arizona Saints in a battle to the very end in one final four game.

The other final four game Team Phoenix defeated the Arizona Cagers 16's. The championship game was a barn burner where Team Phoenix prevailed over the Southwest Rebels in double overtime on a last second shot by tournament MVP 6-0 Chaz Neal (Westview) who led all scorers in the game with 24 points. Here is our all tournament team:......

......... Shane Edwards (Mountain Pointe) 6-7 Team PHX - Athletic wing forward who really flourishes in transition. Right now more comfortable on the block but trying to make the transition to the perimeter. Currently a senior who is really close to qualifying. Has received heavy interest from Montana State, Idaho, Boise State and Grand Canyon. Major upside...............

Do we have scholarships available? How many?

That is a good question. I must admit when I read this I thought he was a senior to be, but you are right he is senior now. I looked up on the net and Montana State is a recent addition to his list. We should not have any scholarships left. If everyone returns and all of our recruits show up that should give us 14 players (13 scholarships max. + Casey). It could be that the coaches are trying to get him to walk on, or maybe a returning player (Pratt?) has decided not to return.

What about Martrel Johnson? Is he still with the team? I never really saw him play. Is he any good?

My understanding is that Martrel will not be back next year. His scholarship was filled this spring.

Again, mslacat comes through with his infinite database of info. :D Thanks! Glad we replaced Mr. Johnson with one of our (very) promising recruits.

I have just heard/read that Montana State could be close to getting a commitment from Gordon Chase 6-foot-5, combo forward Sheridan JC (originally from Baltimore, MD) for 2006-07 season. Chase is rated as the #29th JC player in the nation for next year.

Think Kamar Davis with a perimeter game.

ARE YOU KIDDING!!! 235!!! Look at the picture! If he is 6’5 and has a face and upper body looking like that he is well over 235, or he is walking on toothpicks.
