MSU Kicker transfers to Dakota State

Post by mslacat » Sun Apr 11, 2004 9:37 am

From the Billings Gazette:

MSU kicker heads to Dakota State

HELENA - Dakota State University of Madison, S.D., has signed former Helena Capital athlete Mitch Lynch as kicker for the Trojan football team.

As a freshman at Montana State-Bozeman, Lynch was a walk-on kicker for the Bobcats, but said he is eager to play at Dakota State University where he will major in secondary education math.

"Mitch is a pleasant surprise to this year's recruiting class," said coach Gene Wockenfuss. "A standout soccer player in high school. Mitch was a Division I-AA walk-on kicker that decided to find an early opportunity to play elsewhere. Mitch will provide an immediate impact to our program."

As a high school soccer athlete, Lynch was given honorable mention for the all-conference team, named most inspirational, best defensive player, Gatorade Will to Win Athlete and played in the Shodair Soccer Classic. He also lettered in tennis, golf, and athletic training.

Wow that is a BIG step down. From I-AA - Montana St. to NAIA - Dakota State (not to be confused with my Alma Mater SDSU, in Brookings, SD).

I am guessing that with the current kickers in camp, along with the ones coming in, it was decided that he had a lot better chance of playing time (and maybe scholarship money) if he transferred. Best of luck to him, and I hope he does well.
