Obviously it will be cold to our guys, but they've played in temperatures around 35 before. It was about 38-40 when we went to ASU this year with 30 mph winds that made it feel colder then that. The cold wasn't the reason we played poorly though. So, I really don't know how it will effect our guys. Ideally, we wouldn't pass that much, so hopefully it will have a minimal effect on us. Our punter and kicker have been shakey at times, and the cold and wind at ASU hurt them considerably (as it would most kickers). So...that's where I would expect to see the cold bother us the most.

I have to admit, I don't know much about you guys either outside of the fact you have a strong defense. Can you guys offer a little info about your team as well?

Well for us our running game has been good at times. Passing was our bread and butter all year. Our #1 guy was Jefferson he has had a few huge games. Our top 3 wideouts are all very good and any can have a huge game. We lost our greatest weapon last year to graduation @ QB Travis Lulay. The team was looking for someone to fill his shoes all year but this is impossible. O line is very good. We never run a fullback. Our D like you already know is very good. Special Teams yikes!!!!!!!!! not good.

Glad to know we're not the only team with special teams issues.

I definitely know about Lulay, and I was very impressed with what I heard about him. It's impossible to replace a guy like that. We know a little something about that though with the loss of Ingle Martin the past year.

As far as your offense goes, is it safe to say you guys run a lot of singleback, 3 wide out formations (I'm just assuming considering you said you don't run a FB and have 3 good WR's)?

Yeah, we run a zone blocking scheme and 1-2 tight end sets.

Seriously, take it to them.
They have a great fan base. Met (had beers) several at the NC game, all were great.

MSU will win easily against Furman. ASU beat them this year 40-7 in Boone in 40 degree weather. Although their big fullback, Felton did not play in that game. He is a BIG bruising fullback. If he is healthy they may make a game of it, but I don't think they will fare well in Bozeman. Here's hoping for a second round ASU/MSU matchup in Boone! Coastal Carolina, ASU's first round opponent also beat Furman this year.

I'll fill everyone in as much as I can during the course of the week. I've seen Furman play twice this year (most recently the slaughter at ASU). Primarily a run oriented team, as mentioned in this thread. Their fullback is a beast, plain and simple.

Our O vs. their D: Depends on which Cat offense shows up. If it's yesterday's O, I give the advantage to Furman. If it's an average Cat O, advantage MSU.

Their O vs. our D: No question, advantage Cats. Especially if the D plays like yesterday.

Climate: If the weather holds in Bozeman like it's "supposed" to, weather is a wash. FU would have difficulty in snow & real cold, but the Carolinas are far from the tropics. They've played well (except this year) in Boone vs. ASU. Boone is nearly as high as Bozeman and the weather can be pretty chilly. The ASU/FU game this year was downright bitter with the wind chill. Of course, trying to guess Bozeman's weather 6 days from now is damn near impossible...

This one should be a great game. By the way, to answer an earlier question, a paladin's like a knight.

In response to Torry,

A paladin was a member of the Praetorian Guard in ancient Rome, and a noble close to the king in the Middle Ages. Basically a paladin is summarized as a 'honorable knight' these days.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paladin

Alternatively, the M109 Paladin self-propelled howitzer is a US Army vehicle that can hurl 4 155 mm shells nearly 20 miles in a minute. :D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M109_howitzer

Bobcat could take that down anyday.

Our 35 degrees feels a lot warmer than their 35 degrees due to our lack of humidity. So I doubt weather will be an issue if that forcast holds.

Altitude may play a small part, but I doubt it. I don't think you really feel the altitude effect until you get over a mile high.

And that's all fine-I don't want the elements to decide anything.

Does Furman play on grass or turf?

Natural grass. What's the turf at Bobcat Stadium? I agree the weather shouldn't be a factor if forecast holds but we know about weathermen.
Last year in the semi's we played ASU in 30-35 degree weather and an icy field. Should have won but QB slipped down wide open at the ASU 1 on ice which would have given FU a two score lead late. That QB is now with the Green Bay Packers. Being honest FU should have won consecutive NC's the last 2 years but missed their chances by losing to the eventual champions both years in very close games. This years team is far below the last 2. FYI Furman is the only private school to ever win the NC. Also played in the finals 2 other times, the last being 2001. This is the 7th playoff appearance in the last 8 years. This years team just never has put it all together. Starting QB is injury prone and just can't stay healthy. They were off yesterday and maybe the rest will help the Paladins. I expect MSU to win but get ready to go to Boone, NC the following week as they will kill CCU. BTW the projected high in Greenville next Saturday is 68.

MSU plays on natural grass. It should be in decent shape after a couple of dry weeks here, but it could be a little muddy on the field. And I'd like to say hello to all of our Furman friends and we'll see you on Saturday!

The fourth quarter should be ours with the change in elevation and the cold weather. Of course, we have not had a good 4th quarter all year.

A lof of info from a Furman guy:

Our site is www.theuffp.com but is having trouble....be patient

I am a furman fan and my first thoughts about this game, etc - congrats to you on making the playoffs. I keep up with 1aa a lot and we too lost a great QB in Ingle Martin last year who is now on the Packers roster as third string after transferring from UF. Why are we traveling to your stadium?- You must have outbid us because I have to think you were the last team in? Not a slight - just that most people thought you had to win yesterday to get in. Anyway, good job. We have had a real injury-riddled season and if you look at our scores it shows: (look at the difference in points we score when everyone was healthy for three games):

09/02 Jackvl St W 17-13
09/09 W Georgia W 24-7
09/16 at UNC L 45-42
09/23 W Carolina W 42-7
09/30 at Wofford W 35-21
10/07 at Coast Car L 29-27
10/14 The Citadel W 23-17
10/21 UT-Chatt W 28-22
10/28 at App St L 40-7
11/04 at Elon W 24-13
11/11 G Southern W 13-10

The three games where we had Gray (starting QB) and Felton (best FB in 1aa) we put up 42, 45, and 35. I try to be objective - I really think a healthy Felton is the best FB in 1aa. Ask those from teams we played early in the year. We have never had both healthy since.... Not an excuse, just a clear fact along with OL injuries as mentioned by someone else. Heck, NC State couldn't put but 9 on UNC yesterday. But I don't think we could do much right now. We had an off week this week so maybe some people got healthy.

I see when you played Montana (who we played for the title in 2001) you had some guys hurt pretty bad - " INJURY REPORT: The physical nature of Saturday’s Cat-Griz game manifested itself on Sunday’s injury report. RB Evin Groves (knee) is likely lost for the remainder of the season. The most prominent of the bumps and bruises suffered by the rest of the team came to QB Jack Rolovich (upper torso) and CB Michael Beach (knee), but both are expected to play. LB Will Claggett (knee) and WR Deon Toliver (collar bone) are likely lost for the season. "
Was groves your starting RB? Were Claggett and Toliver starters? Have you had any injuries to others throughout the year? At what position???? Thanks for information - I am interested in this matchup.

A summary of FU football:
We have a proud tradition - won the title in 88 and played in the title game in 85 and 01. We were the only 1aa team to beat National Champ App State last year. We do not rortate QBs as someone on this board said - that was only out of injury necessity. Gray is our starter if available. Unfortunately, as your coaches will see, he was hurt (ankle) for the fourth time against Georgia Southern in our last game. On to the important stuff.... we are a much better running team than passing team. I would say we run 60/70% of plays. We are much better at stopping the run than the pass. Lately our O has dropped off considerably and our D has had to carry us as you can see by our scores.

KEY STAT THAT KILLS ME: We have won 13 consecutive home games in a traditionally good conference and this year we are 6-0 at home. On the road this year we are 2-3.....This does not bode well for Saturday.

STAT YOU HAVE TO LOVE: The last two years the team to knock us out of the playoffs went on to win the NC - we lost to James Madison 14-13 in 2004 and lost to App State 29-23 in 2005. So if you beat us you have a lot to live up to :)

We are a private school of ~2500 students in Greenville, SC and the only private school to ever win the 1aa title.

Good Luck.

The fourth quarter should be ours with the change in elevation and the cold weather. Of course, we have not had a good 4th quarter all year.
This is my biggest concern...We (Furman) have had a tough time coming out of the lockeroom after halftime and performing. Add the altitude to the equation and we may run into some conditioning issues come the 4th quarter.
We have had a week off to recover from all of our injuries and I really don't think the cold temperature will have any impact...the wind chill at my house in downtown Greenville is 36 right now. Its not like Furman is in Charleston. We're also used to playing football in November and December. Its very rare that we aren't playing somewhere cold this time of year. This should be an exciting game...I just hope we here in SC get a chance to watch it. Furman usually travels pretty well but Montana on Thanksgiving weekend is gonna be a tough trek.
