I haven't watched this yet but if it's the series I'm thinking of it wasn't 4th and 42, it was 4th and Goal from the 42!

I was at our Great Grandson’s (2 of them) birthday party, a Place called Jump for Joy. Lots of youngins, very loud. Was trying to listen on my phone. I had caught the 1st and goal from the 4 (is that correct), then the next thing I heard was 4th and goal from the 42. What the heck happened? That in itself tells me the D was doing something right.

Sack on 3rd down from 34 -8

I didn't watch the game until last night. All I knew going into it was the score but didn't know what to expect besides that it had to be somewhat disappointing if we only scored 17 points. It was much stranger than I could have imagined. On each of MH's long drives that went deep into our territory I kept thinking "how are they going to screw this up?" and even though in the back of my mind I knew they wouldn't score I was still nervous every time and shocked at how each drive ended. It was great that the defense got a shutout but to me they are also the reason the offense only scored 17 points. They only had 5 real drives.

They were successful on fourth down. 4-7. I don’t recall the last time I saw a team go for it on fourth down seven times. Most defenses stress being good on THIRD down. MSU was but was bad on fourth down which turned out to be crucial because the opponent went for it 7 times. If MSU had been as good on fourth down as it was on third down that would be 2-7. MSU probably gets 1 or 2 more possessions.

Regardless, people would still be straight up tripping out if the score had been 31-0. It’s hilarious. People wanted 52 points on six possessions. Most fans still don’t know that msu scored on every possession of the first half, they just know that MSU only scored 17 points in the first half and that was unacceptable to them.

Mercyhurst literally had to score on all of its second half possessions after falling behind 17-0. The 17-0 lead was about as insurmountable as a 31-0 halftime lead.

Once upon a time in my one and only trip to Harrisonburg, Virginia, I watched an elite James Madison team do whatever the hell they wanted for the first quarter and a half against a Griz team that had beaten Washington a few months earlier.

Then I watched Cam Humphrey get a concussion, Montana's backup QB tap out of the game and Sammy Akem break his collarbone. And I watched Bobby Hauck switch to a make-shift option offense with a JC quarterback to make sure his team got back on the plane home as soon as possible.

Montana lost 28-6. Given how much better JMU was + the matchup advantages the home team had + the circumstances for the Griz, UM should've lost by 3-4 more TDs.

Point is, if you want to not get blown out and you've already been blown out in that same venue the year before, you can certainly construct and execute a game plan to ensure a narrow loss instead of losing a blowout.

Not sure if I have mad respect for Mercyhurst for deciding that was what they were going to do and then actually doing it.....or if that was so lame of them to not just take their medicine.

Don't mind the Hauck thumbnail....we go back and forth every podcast/video for our analysts that talk about both teams each week. There's a large section about Montana State in here:

"Whoa, let's not get crazy there with all that real stadium talk in Cheney. Sure, when compared to the stadium that PSU plays in, which faces a damn freeway, or whatever UNCU has these days - then yes, Eastern could be construed as having a stadium. It wasn't until last year or the year prior that those rickety, high school, aluminum bleachers were replaced with slightly more robust aluminum seating. Eastern's stadium is still about a click and a half above a high school stadium."

The red turf takes that click away. The only good thing about that red rag is that it doesn't show the blood stains.

That's where I kind of landed. Mercyhurst's second half plan was simply playing not to lose by a lot, hold onto the ball as long as possible, shorten the game, go home.

I listen to all of it on 2x speed, and it really helps. If anyone else is limited on time, I have found that most things I can listen to at 2x speed, and everything else at 1.5x speed. Definitely much more efficient.

I think the Cats are going to start to figure out who they are on offense. Defense is going to play well. 38 - 17 Cats.

MAGA!!!
