Dude is a freak of nature. One of the best WRs we’ve ever landed.
A freak? In what way?
This way…
100 catches for 2,009 yards and 26 touchdowns. That’s just his sophomore and junior seasons! I don’t know of any players that have done that but I’m sure some have. That way.
Gotcha. Seems like usually when a player is called a freak, it’s due to physical attributes and not statistical production. Just wanted to clarify.
Personally, I try not to go too crazy over stats. While important, there’s so many variables (type of offense, other skill players, competition level, etc) that can inflate or deflate stats. Case in point, Ifanse was under recruited because the Wing-T offense inflated his stats so much that teams weren’t sure if it would translate or not, while the same style offense had the opposite result for Cam Ward.
I’m not sure on sophomore/junior stats, but Max Hendrick and Chris Long have had the most impressive individual season stats that I can recall for a WR in recent history. I think Jabez Woods had over 100 catches his senior year too.

Receiving
GD Team Year GP Rec Yds Avg Y/G Lng TD
Jr. Var 24-25 11 46 984 21.4 89.5 84 14
So. Var 23-24 10 54 1025 19.0 102.5 83 12
Varsity Total 21 100 2009 20.1 95.7 84 26
The consistency from soph to junior also stands out. 19.0…21.4; 54…46; 12…14; 1,025…984.

Kid has good speed with a sub 11.0 second 100. Not big though at 5’11” and 170. Comparable to Taco which would be great if he was became as successful! Had 4 D1 offers consisting of MSU, Portland State, Air Force and Idaho State.
His stats may be a little misleading as he played at a Class 2A school in WA. Washington has two larger classifications with 3A and 4A. 2A in WA is comparable to Class A or B in Montana.

The enrollment at East Valley in Yakima is 1,000. That puts it between AA and A here. I think around 300 is the cap for B. I don’t know of any Montana players in any Class that put these kinds of receiving numbers up as a sophomore/junior.

Gabe Sulser was close if you count touches and yards (rushing and receiving). Which is great news.

I actually thought about him earlier but I couldn’t find his sophomore year numbers. His jr/sr stats were insane. And, yes, that’s great company.

Freshman and sophomore numbers were great as well. Finished his career with over 260 receptions, 4,000 receiving yards, and 50 receiving touchdowns. Was close to 2,500 rushing yards as well. 80 overall touchdowns.

East Valley is 2A. Here are the classifications for Washington:
https://www.wiaa.com/classifications/
Assuming East Valley has 1,000 enrollment (I saw some conflicting numbers), they are playing schools with Class 2A size which goes down to as low as 450 enrollment. The kid is a stud. We just can’t tell if he is a Gabe Sulser comp or a Tom Carter comp based on stats and competition.

These are the enrollments of the schools in EV’s district and their 2025 football schedule:
Grandview 1,168
Presser 860
Ephrata 882
Othello 1,333
Toppenish 988
Selah 1,124
Ellensburg 974
Quincy 1,495
Smallest MT AA schools:
Belgrade 946
Helena High 986
Big Sky 1,147
Hellgate 1,265
Butte 1,269
Capital 1,307
Biggest A school is Columbia Falls at 693. Butte Central is smallest at 116. Thirteen of the 23 A schools are below 500.
I would characterize the EV competition as AA/A, not A/B. It’s more like AA than A.
The only MT prep receiver with similar soph/jr numbers is Sulser. He’s in real good company, statistically speaking. However, Sulser’s career never fully materialized as I believe an injury stunted his progress and production. Just another example of how things can go south after high school.
Obviously, we rarely have a consensus on who will be great. We can go round and round with it all day.
Stevens looks like a baller to me. He seems to have really good football instincts. His defense and special teams play also exhibit this.
We’ll probably forget we even had this conversation by the time he arrives on campus. lol

Pretty crazy to think that three of the best guys to come out of Montana the last 10 years are tiny slot receivers from Billings...
Between Sulser, Junior Bergen and Taco Dowler, Sulser was the best in high school. One of the most electric players I've ever seen. But in college, Bergen and Dowler have both been just ridiculous. Interesting that Montana used to produce an assembly line of defensive ends and OL but now, it's just as much offensive skill positions as any other spots.

Pretty crazy that Dowler has two years left. Led the nation in 2022 with 18.0 on punt returns. First team All-BSC punt returner in 2024.
MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).
