That's awesome and good to know. Justus Perkins isn't on there. Makes me wonder if we'll keep him out this season, utilize his medical redshirt that Keaton alluded to (if he wants to come back for another year), and start next year. That would be great for this team. His leadership skills are phenomenal.
This is something I have been wondering about also. Sain has been playing well, but curious why this really has not came up as a topic of discussion from Vigen in the pressers or QBC meetings. I know Vigen plays his cards close to the vest, just something I am really curious about if we are looking at doing? Also curious if Perkins is interested in going that route?
Vigen addressed it in yesterday's press conference, it sounds like they're fully planning to have Justus come back and play this season when he's healthy enough. He will travel to EWU this weekend and has been practicing, so the injury doesn't appear to be season-ending which it would need to be for him to be able to use a medical redshirt. Since he already used his normal redshirt in 2019 the 4-game rule doesn't come into play, as soon as he steps on the field his eligibility is up after this year.

I think this was asked in the presser and Vigen basically said Perkins isn’t eligible to redshirt this year.

I would be curious but don't know how to find out: Since the NCAA seems to ignore playoff participation as it relates to the 4 game medical redshirt rule, if someone like Perk came back and only played in the playoffs, could he potentially still get a medical? I realize that 5 years ago this would be a hard no, but it seems like in recent years this is loosening up quite a bit.

I see the 7th year QB for McNeese who recently got injured is going to apply for a medical after playing in 6 games this year and going down for the season, will be interesting to see if he gets it.

Medical redshirts don’t seem to have a lot of known rules, but from what Vigen said, I thought it sounded like it has to be a season ending injury.

Perkins can’t redshirt according to presser today.
I picked up on that as well. Tough deal, but like so many other players for MSU and everywhere it's great to see him contributing any way he can be it through GA-style coaching or encouraging others.
I believe it was said that with a medical he can't play. I'm not 100% certain of the rule, but it sounds like it would be a decision of playing in fewer games this season or not playing at all, including playoffs, to qualify for a medical redshirt. Feel free to correct me if I have the wrong interpretation
That’s the way I understood it too. Sounds like he wants to get out there though, essentially burning a chance for medical.
Well, I can definitely understand wanting to be a more meaningful part of a potential championship team than being what right now amounts to a GA (no disrespect to Chambers). If that's the case and he's 100% healthy, he absolutely deserves that, considering how much he's contributed to the success of Bobcat football the last 4 years... And our depth on the OL would immediately get a boost with Sain being available back at Guard. Win-win situation.
Perkins could still play in 8 games if he plays this weekend. And 6 of those games would be critical.

Probably not, but I was just pointing out that we have a lot of season left as I expect to play in Frisco. Perkins will have a chance to contribute in important games on a national championship caliber team if he can get healthy.

Ya, great point. It's really a huge benefit to have a player of Perk's caliber as a BACKUP heading into the national championship, if that's the way it plays out. We might have the two best centers in the FCS. Of course I am never biased on things like that. :)

No doubt it used to be pretty absolute, again just looking at the wrinkle of playoffs only vs. regular season, or the "loosening up" the NCAA has done with some of this very recently.

I think the NCAA should be as lenient as possible with medical redshirts for starting players or players who play significant time. Very few players make it far enough to be injured and end up having playing time taken away. Most, probably more than 50% of all players that sign, never play significant minutes. Taking away time from a player that makes it into a starting position just to make room for a player that probably won't ever see the field (I'd say about 33% never play a down as a starter) doesn't seem right to me.

I agree on the contributor point, but maybe there should be a hard cap also, or a game cap.

For instance, you get 6 years to play 52 regular season games, or 7 years to play 4 years, with one redshirt year and then the potential for up to 2 medical/other hardship years, with similar conditions to current medical redshirt but wouldn't matter if you were hurt early and couldn't play, or were hurt late/in the spring and couldn't play until late.

I get this viewpoint, but I don’t necessarily agree. You can argue it the other way just as easily.

Miami has a TE in his 8th or 9th season. Utah’s QB Rising is reportedly eligible for another season, and he’s been there for 6+ years at least. How many younger players aren’t getting playing time because of those situations? Same idea as how the extra Covid year led to better HS players going FCS bc there aren’t available scholarships due to older players.

It really sucks when players miss time due to injuries, but that’s just life. They should get 5 years to play, and that’s it.

It's his 9th. I brought this up in another thread but can't remember if anyone responded as to how this is allowable yet Perk can't get another year.

A player should get a set number of games, instead of years. That would eliminate a lot of confusion. If, after 4-5-9 years, you still have two games left and the coaches want to keep you around, then go for it. Simple fix. I remember the days when someone would play one down and that would count as a year.

Also, someone should be prepping players for life in college sports better. I see so many kids stoked to play in college and they are downright giddy when they "make their announcement" to the world. Then after one year, they're done. The same thing people say to college players about making it in the pros, should be told to HS players about making it in college. College and high school are two different animals.

You can tell kids until you’re blue in the face. You never truly know how any high school athlete will adjust to the college grind until they experience it.
