The phrase "embarrassment of riches" comes to mind. Hopefully injuries don't play a role in determining who gets the most touches like they have the last two seasons. I wonder if the coaches could experiment at some point with formations having two RBs on the field at the same time like they did with the "Big Cat/Little Cat" formations with Mellott and Chambers on the field together.
Yes!! I would love to see some 2 back sets. Reminds me of the diamond formation we would use in the Choate days, we thought that backfield was scary then… imagine Tommy and any two of those RB’s all in the backfield. Scary
The issue in doing this a taking away a good blocker. These are great running backs, but are they great fullbacks? I don’t think the deception in the backfield is worth taking a dude like Rohan off the field that can bury people.

Great point. Especially when we’ve had such great blockers in years past like Snell and R.J. Fitzgerald. Did you happen to notice how Rohan looked as a blocker against UNM? I’m assuming he blocks well given his size and athleticism, but it wasn’t something I watched for or that stood out to me

Jones is much more than just a runner. He blocks well and catches the ball well but most of all he’s a heads up player. Lots of players have skills but having instincts like he exhibited vs UNM is rare.

But, yeah, it’s a loaded room and it’s got a variety of different styles. I think Coon might be a good short yardage option. Humphrey, imo, made the first down vs UNM. I haven’t heard a good explanation for why they ruled he didn’t.

What about sitting tommy for a couple plays and giving Adam jones 3 or 4 wild cat snaps each game….. just a thought.
I do like this idea, especially in the red zone. Even if there isn’t a real threat to pass, we’re still really hard to stop with an extra blocker. Obviously it’s ideal with a running QB, but even with Chambers I’m not sure that teams were really worried about him throwing in the red zone anyways, and still couldn’t stop it more often than not.

A big reason the RB room is "loaded" is because of MSU's offensive line. I could have run through some of the holes they created last Saturday. Albeit, slowly and I would have to be helped off the field after an ordinary tackle. But, I could run through those holes.

We’ve had 3 players hit 100 yds rushing before IN THE SAME GAME

That could happen again this week

An outrageous prediction would be 4 players hitting 100 in the same game. Donjoy Mafia style. Actually could happen - Tommy, Scottre, Adam, Julius (or pick any 3 from the RB room) all over 100

I think having done 2rb sets is coming and soon. The ability to freeze the defense is to great not to. They could do a version of the triple option from shotgun...see it all the time. Run midline with scottre, read that 3tech... he takes dive pull it attack the edge leave that de free seal the lb...de takes qb pitch to Jones he goes to his turn up field with mellot Crack with the wr..... same with pass but you load on the de with Jones pull back off the line with mellot...te bumps and go the lb...wr comes for the Crack and can either curl up to hold the safety or go Crack and go.... just my mind working trying to get a many athletes on the field as possible.

If it were me I'd run the danger order of things as last week. If it's working don't disrupt things. Coaching isn't that hard but we make it sometimes.

One of Bronco's comments leading up to the game stood out to me. He said something along the lines of how "they know who they are and they know their system, and so they are able to recruit guys that fit well into their system".

RB1 is down? Plug in a freshman and true sophomore. Lose a couple awesome OL to the portal and have an All American center go down 10 days before the first game? Plug in 5 guys either playing in their first start and/or playing a new position. Still rush for 360+ yards.

Keep recruiting good fits and keep developing. It's no surprise we hired within for OC. Just keep this train rolling down the tracks.

I haven't dug into it yet, but I think this was the first time that the QB/QBs didn't run for 100 yards (or close) in a game where MSU had over 300 yards as a team, especially not in a competitive game. Usually, Mellott or Chambers or both would have a huge chunk of the team rushing total. Mellott/the QB position only had 30 of the 367 yards rushing. It could be a huge development if the bulk (90%) of the rushing yards is generated by backs and receivers.

It's happened 12 times in the past 31 games. Mostly in routs. Would be a big shift to get 90% of the rush total from RBs instead of 60% and not have to rely so much on QBs to generate offense, especially in the run game.

I know this has already been discussed a little bit, but I was super impressed with Adam Jones and Scottre on Saturday. Scottre has an incredible burst that is really difficult for defenses, particularly on the read option plays when they have to hesitate for a second to make sure Tommy doesn’t pull it. Jones obviously has breakaway speed to bust some long ones, but his instincts looked incredible reading the defense, and also in the pass game. That play on the last drive where he took out the LB and then got up to get open was an incredible instinctual play.

So… how does this work when Davis comes back? We know how hard he runs and he is great at getting the tough yards, but I think Jones and Scottre have more burst and big play ability. Do we find a way to use all 3? Maybe, but typically in big games you end up riding the hot hand, so the question is, who do you guys think should be RB1?
I would actually say the weak points for the running game is we don't have a great short yardage back. Despite Scottre's build, he struggles (for whatever reason) in short down and distance situations. Adam runs hard but again its just not his strong suit. However, Julius Davis is a bull in a china closet when he runs so I think that's the immediate upgrade.
Elliott is a great short yardage back, he's like a little bowling ball.

by the time I got to the hole there would probably be six defenders there.

I pulled a calf muscle, jumping up and down, after the Cats beat the gris in Missoula in 2016.
