My guess is that the timing of SFA's cancellation of this game is due to them switching conferences starting this season. They were in the WAC, now moving back to the Southland Conference. Our game was out-of-conference, but perhaps a new conference schedule messed with their dates?
Wad my theory saw when looked at sfa news "southland releasing new schedule soon" or something along those lines

Mercyhurst is a game that MSU could suit up the Rugby club team and demolish them. The only question is will they stay in Helena or camp at the Lubrecht forest campground. This is an awful matchup.
This is their first year as an FCS team. No wonder we were able to schedule them over a holiday weekend. I definitely won't be making much of an effort to change my original flight to try and make it back for this one.

I hope they had to payout for canceling.

What I can glean from their website is that including the trip to Bozeman they open with 4 straight road games. The travel to Robert Morris prior to the Bobcat game. They have 8 road games and two home games. In 2023 I found an attendance number for a home game at just under 1500 was the highest I saw. This is exactly what is dragging down FCS football and makes a general reclassification necessary.

I'm guessing since it was a home-and-home that there was only a buyout for MSU after this year's game. Might be a clause for late cancellation or something like that.

Impressed that they were able to get a game in its place so quickly. If that happened a while back everyone would be left hanging for weeks.

The top 1/3 of the BSC and MVFC are so far out in front of the rest of the FCS, especially 95% of teams on the east coast, that there are bound to be multiple out of conference games like this. Teams want easy games to ease into the schedule and get guaranteed wins and mid-level teams don't want to play elite teams they would lose to and hurt their playoff chances. The fans have to suffer for the teams' financial goals and postseason positioning.

SFA isn't a good, or even average, team but at least they wouldn't have rolled over by the end of the first quarter.

The positive is that the scheduled return to SFA can now be scheduled as a stand-alone home game (net gain in revenue) or part of a new home and home with a better team (better future schedule).

A little chatter but no clarity from the SFA fan forum.

It makes UNCU's stadium look respectable.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a school post about its stadium square footage before.

I kind of liked UNCs stadium, except for the track. I’ve never been to EWUs or PSUs stadiums, but they look worse on TV to me than UNCs does.

Bobcat athletics is a business to the coaches, school leadership, and players. It's time the fans treat Bobcat athletics as a business too.

Found this on the SFA thread note the date:
SFASawmillGuy 9:00p, 12/28/23
Looks like our 12 game schedule is tentatively set, but I think our game against Montana State might be changed. Ryan Ivey told me we would have 6 home and 6 away games, and we just signed with Northern Colorado for a Home-Home, so I would assume Montana State is the only game we can flex off our schedule for another home game.

I'm just hoping we don't have to replace it with a D2 game

I'm not gonna talk any garbage about Mercyhurst because 1, they're doing us a solid here and 2, as a Pennsylvania guy I had actually heard of them before.

I hope SFA goes winless though, ****** 'em

Can we bring this up when we play them in like 10-15 years and call out their fans that had nothing to do with it?
