Casey Bauman to the Chargers mini-camp

https://3downnation.com/2024/04/27/cana ... ree-agent/

Canadian quarterback Casey Bauman has signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent, according to a report from TSN’s Farhan Lalji.

Bauman was raised along the border in Sumas, Wash. but qualified for Canadian citizenship through his mother, Kelli, who was born in Abbotsford, B.C. He was added to the 2024 CFL Draft in early March.

The six-foot-six, 229-pound passer has started the past two seasons at Augustana University, a Division II program located in Sioux Falls, S.D. He completed 61.0 percent of his passes for 4,160 yards, 43 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions over 21 games with the Vikings and rushed for 572 yards and six touchdowns.

Bauman started his collegiate career at Montana State where he spent three seasons, completing 51.1 percent of his passes for 477 yards and two touchdowns. He went 2-1 as a starter, helping the Bobcats defeat Southeast Missouri and Western Illinois in 2019.

Alex Gubner hasn’t signed with a team yet. I find it hard to believe he wouldn’t get a shot in a mini-camp.

Could be weighing offers from a few teams. Free agent signings will take place over the next few days, even after mini camp if a team isn’t happy with what they see. Rosters are constantly updated year round.

Mini-camps are next weekend, aren’t they? He’s not exactly in a position to be weighing offers as an undrafted player.

I know there is still time, but pretty surprised by the minimal FA deals or camp offers for the cats and griz, or big sky for that matter…

Lack of Big Sky players/Cat/Griz players could be an artifact of COVID years. NFL teams don't generally smile upon 22+ year old rookies. Some guys drafted were 20. Not saying it's correct, but I believe that has definitely had an effect on certain players.

I still believe MSU’s 2021 team stays in this Frisco game if Tommy doesn’t get hurt on the first drive while heading for a score. These Bison from that team are all on NFL rosters.

And if Chase Benson was healthy...NDSU wouldn't have been able to double team TA every single play.

I wouldn’t be surprised. Unfortunately, I’m not.

Is there any news source tracking past FCS transfers that ended up getting drafted or free agent deal? Curious to see how often the portal transfer up resulted in a chance at the NFL.

So only the 4th time ever that the big sky did not have a draft pick, right?

I would expect this to be more of the norm going forward unfortunately. In today’s portal world, majority of the nfl caliber players will not be sticking around. Valdez for example.
Valdez? He will not be in the NFL. I don't expect him to start for Washington. I wish him luck this year but he just is not big enough to play at the next level.
There’s a lot of DL that are around 6’4 290 in the NFL.

Except every team was impacted by Covid. It's a slightly down year but not unusual for the Cats. Pre-2021 what was our average number of players to be drafted/UDFA/minicamp invite? Probably not higher than 2. I know we're in a different place now but I expect next year to be much higher. There weren't a lot of seniors on the 2023 team and they also weren't highly desirable positions/situations (multiple TE, backup QB, good-not-great defensive players).

And when you look back a year or so ago, I don't think many on here were predicting there was a lot of NFL talent in the senior class. I don't think I tried to guess, but some thought Pickering might get a shot because of his frame and athleticism. I think we've mostly suspected this for a year.

Only two transfers I can find are McCallan Castles, former TE from UC Davis who transferred this last year to Tennessee and signed as an UDFA with the Eagles....and Casey Bauman.
