I am not sure that I am remembering correctly, but was there a Scott Sax, who played football and basketball, maybe in the early 80’s?

Maybe but, I don't remember Scott playing basketball.
Stu Dodds, from the late 70's/early 80's was the punter...he also played basketball.

Bobby Brookhart from early to mid 1970s I believe. Played football and wrestled. One of the fastest nimble big guys I ever saw. Wrestled About 200 and played full/half back.

Can never think of his first name but 72ish, Karnagy, football and rodeo, but don't think he participated in both the same season...

I hurt myself trying to remember his name. I remembered that he had an older brother on the team so I researched the '76 championship team. I found a story that listed Vince Dodds as a key player. Once I saw Dodds I was able to come up with Stu.
Ok, next mystery......gots to find Jimmy Hoffa. (Google it youngsters)

Re: Dual sport college athletes
He was basically both. By rule, a missed FG was a dead ball where it landed in the 1960s, so the Cats would just send him out on 4th down to kick from anywhere.

Wilson was a kinda sorta. Was dual sport freshman year, two games, then went full time track the remainder of his time at MSU. Great kid, and definitely made a great decision with sticking with just track.Hi-Line Bobcat wrote: ↑Thu Feb 01, 2024 2:03 pmChris WilsonAFCAT wrote: ↑Thu Feb 01, 2024 1:49 pmI saw in the Bobcat collective interview a few days ago that Andrew Powdrell will be running track this Spring. We don't see many college athletes playing two sports these days. I seem to remember some wide receivers, before the Choate era, that also ran track but I can't recall a name.
Does anyone remember some dual sport Bobcat athletes in the past 20 years or so?
Jobman-but I think he rodeoed after he was done with football
There were some other track guys, but I can’t remember.

I think Scott Harry is the most known example given. He was a solid contributor in both sports he played at MSU and football and basketball attract the most attention and attendance.

Dick Lyman played on 76 championship football team and rodeoed. Was all big sky defensive lineman. Brother Rod quit football team to concentrate on rodeo. Went on to qualify for multiple National Finals Rodeos in steer wrestling.

Seems to be male dominated thread…but on the women’s side…in recent history…
Kamden Hilborn was on the WBB team and a pole vaulter on the Bobcat track team as a freshman before transfer to Carol College.
Shelby Schweyen was on the gris WBB team before joining Bobcat track team. Just a couple weeks ago she had the 4th best Pentathlon score ever recorded for a Bobcat woman.
I have no information that she will do both sports but the WBB recruit from Saco coming in next year had the first or second best women high jump in the state at all levels in high school. Wonder if she will give it a try at least for the outdoor season. Lot of work though to do both at same time….

It was Shelby’s first pentathlon she’s ever competed in, too. Dad Brian competed in the 1992 nationals/decathlon trials and finished 8th in his 5th decathlon ever with a score that would have been Top 3 for years afterward.BobcatDel wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2024 9:52 amSeems to be male dominated thread…but on the women’s side…in recent history…

As I recall when I was at MSU in 1976, Jeff Muri played football and did rodeo. I recall he never called for a fair catch in either sport.

Re: Dual sport college athletes
Scotty Neuman and Tony Moore (Amhad Rashad's nephew) both ran track while on the football team 1986-7
Mainly to get out of spring ball
Scotty was a tall lanky receiver who was fast, but struggled to haul in balls - he went back home to Minnesota after one year here. I don't remember if Tony ran track more than 1 year.
Coach Dale asked TE Joel Grace if he wanted to run the 800 - he was ranked in WA in HS - but I don't think he ever did
Several football players wanted to play Bball when a few roundball players went down with injuries, Stu Starner was Bball coach - he held open tryouts and brought a guy on to the team for 1 season - who had played for one of the Billings high schools I think - not playing any sports at MSU. Don't remember his name, but he scored like 20 points in his first game for the Cats.

Didn't Mark Desin have a short stint with basketball prior, or during, to playing football. I know his brother Danny played Bball.

Re: Dual sport college athletes
Kelly Davis from Butte was a receiver on the national championship football team in 1984 and also ran track. If memory serves, he won a conference championship in the 110 m high hurdles. Dude was a beast.
