Did no one pay attention to Smith against NAU? He was 16/21 for 244 and 5 TDs before getting yanked in the 3rd. Granted it was against NAU but I wouldn't underestimate this kid, he looks like he is starting to progress as a player.
I agree though, I think a PSU loss would benefit us more than a PSU victory.

I get worried when I see a lot of people on here taking NAU so lightly. Especially when we are coming off a week layoff. Sometimes teams do not play as well after a bye week. I hope we are not over loooking NAU. They may be looking to atone for the embarassment last week! We need to be ready totake care of business-no prisioners!

Yeah, but - and I know I could get my butt kicked big time for this - Basketball players suffer ACL's all the time, and in just a while, the knee's better than ever. I know it's the kid's last year, but he'll be just fine. I feel worse for our guy... never know what long-term effect a concussion will have.jagur1 wrote:Cal Poly has a problem now also. I'd be more conserned about a Cat's win than a U of M loss at this point in your season. We may have a loss in us, very true, and PSU could be the one who does it, but I think the chances of Portland winning at U of M are slim. The loss, better odds I'd say, would come in Bozeman.Hell's Bells wrote:i honestly belive that the griz have at least one more loss in them before cat griz...ewu gave everybody a template on how to beat them, and everyone will take advantage of it.

WE CONTROL OUR OWN DESTINY!
If we win out, and PSU wins out, we are both in the playoffs.
I am disappointed with the general lack of confidence many BCN posters have in our chances at EWU. IMHO, I see us going into EWU healthy, fresh and with revenge on our minds. Its 4-0 from this point forward!
Don't forget the Lulay factor!

I'll just reiterate my mantra -
PSU can't win in November, when it really counts. I think November comes early this weekend for them.
Weber is very good and very confident right now. I don't think they lose at home again this season.
Unfortunately, I think the biggest question mark in my mind rests with my beloved Cats. I still have not seen any consistency except that we are 1-dimensional on offense (and it's the wrong dimension for November and December games), and we can neither stop the run or the pass with any certainty. As much as I think positively, the reality is that it is highly improbable that the Cats will close out the season 4-0. I tell you what, though, if they do win out, that means they have solidified their running game and their defense.

If the Cats solidfy their running game that should also help our defense as well just because of that (less time on the field). Our defense when fresh can be pretty good, but we don't have a lot of depth on the DL so we tend to wear down a little I think. Kolone/Lowe coming back should help the depth though too. If we can get the running game cooking though, we ARE GOING TO BE TOUGH!Bleedinbluengold wrote:I'll just reiterate my mantra -

Why do we keep talking about needing the running game to keep the defense off of the field. I do not think we have been dominated in time of possession in any game we have played. Our short passing game keeps the clock running and has given us long drives. Our defense needs to step up and force some 3 and outs to keep themselves off of the field.

If you have a bad defense it doesn't help all that much to control the clock. I don't buy all that BS about running game helps the defense. The defense has to get stops either with turnovers or downs or else you don't have a championship caliber team. A defense has to stand on its own.tetoncat wrote:Why do we keep talking about needing the running game to keep the defense off of the field. The two aren't completely mutually exclusive. Ball control gives the D more rest. However, as Teton points out, the offense has had some long sustained drives without running very effectively. My point is that if a team has any desire to go deep into the playoffs, they need an effective running game in order to win in November and December. There's no question about that.iaafan wrote:If you have a bad defense it doesn't help all that much to control the clock. I don't buy all that BS about running game helps the defense. A more pass oriented team is going to have more 3 and outs usually than a power running game. We had 2-3 quick 3 and outs against Cal Poly and PSU which gave our defense hardly any time if any to rest on the sideline. I'm not saying we need a full running game. If anything we just need to make sure we limit as many 3 and outs we have for the rest of the year as we do not have depth in our DL and if you put them out for sustained periods of time their gas tanks go down a lot faster than if they get more breaks throughout the game.tetoncat wrote:Why do we keep talking about needing the running game to keep the defense off of the field. First of all BleedBlGld... why such pessimissm? Sounds like you have already given up the ship. This is still a very, very good football team with more untapped potential than any team in the BSC. Given they have struggled on D... but the O is solid. A ball control passing offense similar to what we have gone to is just as effective as a run controlled offense. Better if both were working ... no doubt. But I choose to be more optomistic and believe that our D will perform opposite of what they did last year! 4-0 is very achievable with this team.
Shoemaker... you gotta be on something to thing the chances of the Bobcats losing are better than UM's this weekend. PSU will give the Friz all they want and maybe more... but I am still pulling for a Friz win. The Cats have to play well... no doubt.... and they will.

That's not a given. It helps, but I'm sure there are several examples of teams that have made it all with way with poor running games - UM in the early 90's for example... Nothing but a kick-a$$ passing game.Bleedinbluengold wrote:The two aren't completely mutually exclusive. Ball control gives the D more rest. In the PSU game we scored on the last drive of 1st. half, then had halftime, then went on about a 6 minute drive to open up the second half. Thats a ton of rest for the defense. PSU came right back and rammed it down our throat. Defense should be using that time to make adjustments when the offense does stay on the field that long.

I think we can all agree, our defense is suspect and in need of improvement. However, if you look at who we have played, maybe it isn't quite as bad as it appears. Hopefully this NAU game will be the confidence builder that our defense needs in order to get us on track and into the playoffs.
Positive thinking? Well maybe, but I think with Lowe & Kolone coming back we are going to see a much improved defense, with more depth. Translation..... STOPS!
