Re: QB Update
Christ this place is unbelievable. You'd think we'd lost yesterday. I missed most of yesterday's game, and I think I'm glad I did. From what I can tell 50% of the whiners won't be happy until we have the next coming of Tom Brady in Bozeman, the other won't be happy until Troy Andersen plays every single snap of every game...
WTF is wrong with you people!
We have a good team with heart like I've never seen in Bobcat uniforms. I'm proud of these kids, especially our offense, they're doing a lot more than what they've done in Choates past. And they are actively trying to figure out how to get better.... Que the calls of we just need a QB. Sure a great QB would be great and game changing, but ask yourselves why don't we have one?? Have you seen our freaking Defense lately???? Looks to me we spent a lot of money on the defensive side of the ball, which leaves less for the Offense, and we're not FBS so there's not enough soup in the pot for everyone. Like most FCS teams your either an Offensive power metal EWU, JSU, SHSU (past MSU) or defensive power like most the mfc (with the exception of NDSU which is the only team that's figured it out in the FCS).
We don't have a world beating QB, because we don't need one. We need a serviceable QB that can game manage and keep us in games. And before you start screaming about we don't have any QBs try and think of what 18 year old kid or transfer would want to go to a team that they are not the star by design, it's a tough sell, same reason we look back in the WR room, tough sell.
I think the coaches are doing great with what we have, are we going to win the Natty this year NO. Can we win the BSC this year, YES. Sometimes it takes baby steps but we're headed the right direction, and this team is tough and full of a bunch of great kids with a ton of heart. Root for them and quit being a bunch of little bitches.

People calling for the 3rd string QB, or ripping on TR for his play up to this point are goofy, or don't understand football... or at least don't understand what offense we run. As others have stated, we are 5-1.
The Cats are a very good 5-1 FCS team that happens to not have a steady starting QB yet. But make no mistake, we will go .500 in Big Sky play if Rovig is allowed to stay under center the rest of the season. He is simply not a starting QB. The team knows this too. Bauman has a much higher ceiling as a QB and needs to be playing over Rovig if TA or Jonsen are not taking snaps at QB.
We will have a very small chance of winning our next 2 games if Rovig is allowed to take the bulk of the snaps at QB.

Re: QB Update
I don’t how good or bad Beltran is. I do know that coaches think Bauman and Rovig are better. I trust they want to win more than I do and will play the best option available.catsack wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2019 12:50 am****** if he’s that bad cut Beltran, what’s the point of keeping him if he can’t beat out two receivers and a linebacker, why waist his time?Cataholic wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2019 12:25 amYou have done a lot of research on Beltran, but I guarantee that the coaches know a hell of a lot more than you do about Beltran. I also guarantee you that they want the best person at QB and they have decided that it is not Beltran. Do you really think your analysis based on Beltran’s high school resume is better than the close observation of our coaches??bobcatbob wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 10:53 pmHe is really not even number 3 with Jonsen, Anderson and even Kassis playing before him.Cat4LifeHouseDivided wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 10:46 pmYes, QB has been a but of a sore spot but do you think they are so bad they would overlook a guy. To me, it speaks volumes that despite our struggles with qb, he still sits at 3.bobcatbob wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 10:43 pmYes, I do wonder. I personally like Choate as our coach. I think he is great. His background and strength is defense though. We have really struggled with this QB position.Cat4LifeHouseDivided wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 10:17 pmBecause the coaches clearly dont think he has it. Ive seen his stats from spring and fall camp. Good numbers but against the 3rd team defense. I agree he has been a winner, but you have to wonder why he still sits at 3.bobcatbob wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 10:15 pmCB May be a good QB before his time is up here. But right now he is fundamentally way behind. He has a lot to learn. He played at such a small school, the competition was not there at that level. Rovig is serviceable. However, we should expect better if our goal is winning the chipper. Yes, I would like to see Beltran get a chance because I have researched his background and have watched him in practice just about every day of fall camps since he has been here. He is fundamentally solid, played at a high level in high school, had the same private QB mentor as Dalton Sneed all thru his high school years, won championships and is a gamer like Lulay and McGhee. He is the type of kid who steps up when you need a big play. No he is not 6’ 5” or 6’ 8” but he is a winner. Why he is not getting a chance, I don’t know. It has been between Rovig and Bauman all along.
And seriously, do you really not understand that Jonsen, Kassis and TA are special situation wildcat QB’s? Those guys getting snaps for a run play has absolutely zero to do with Beltran’s abilities as a QB.

Re: QB Update
The play of rovig yesterday was not the reason the game got close. A couple bad penalties, a couple questionable play calls, and a ghastly special teams mistake contributed as much or more as his INT. Made a great td throw to kassis. Some good quick hits on outs and slants. We did enough offensively with limited possessions to win the game. Was he great? No. But very competent. This team has not lost an FCS game yet. 5-1. Let's keep it in perspective, can we?

Re: QB Update
I honestly expect a turnover a game from a first year starting freshman or sophomore. Jones already has two fumbles but no one is talking about benching him. Does Rovig/Bauman need to get better for a NC? Definitively yes but how many people really thought we'd be 5-1 right now? We are not NDSU. It takes time and we've been steadily progressing the entire time Choate has been here. Enjoy the process.

Re: QB Update
Watching some other games yesterday and some of the NFL games today got me wondering... why don't we ever run screens to our backs? It's a good way to take advantage of teams blitzing to stop the run and a good way to give the QB an easy high percentage throw.
One other thing for those people that say something along the lines of "that ball was thrown too hot." That's a tired line and I would be willing to bet no WRs or TEs will give that as an excuse for why they didn't catch the ball. During the Washington game last night the announcers talked about how Jacob Eason throws rockets most of the time and how his WRs and TEs like it because it's easier to catch than a duck and they know it's going to be right there for them to make a play. If a ball hits a guy in the hands he should catch it.

Re: QB Update
I miss Jabari but glad to hear Lance's name yesterday. Receivers need to start carrying their weight on this team. Mahomes gets several completions each week due to his receivers efforts.
While registering my vehicles the assessor stated "I have had both Cat and Griz students and alums work for me and the Griz end up working under the direction of the Cats."

Very good point. I also think our guys are capable of doing some great things in space. Also easy pass to make.BleedingBLue wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2019 2:04 pmWatching some other games yesterday and some of the NFL games today got me wondering... why don't we ever run screens to our backs? Re: QB Update
I think the reason a lot of people on BN are getting down on Rovig is mostly because the Griz ate doing so well and Sneed looks like an all american. Be that as it may, we need to worry about doing things our way no the UM way. Lots of games are about matchups not how previous games have been played. So sit back and see what happens.
This next week may be our toughest game of the season. SAC is for real. Their QB Thomson is just as good as any we have seen and their defense is playing lights out. Their only losses have been to ASU and Fresno. We are lucky to be at home.

I agree that SAC looks to me much improved, but their wins are over bottom feeder UNC, a DII and a very wounded EWU with all 3 wins being at home.
I tend to usually throw out the FBS games, but the ASU loss impressed me in week 2, I thought they played them really tough

If Sneed is an All-American it will be partly because he is good, not great, and partly because his teammates make him look great. Akem and Torre come down with anything thrown their way, crap throw or not. If Jabarri was playing right now our QBs would have better numbers guaranteed.Helcat72 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2019 3:16 pmI think the reason a lot of people on BN are getting down on Rovig is mostly because the Griz ate doing so well and Sneed looks like an all american. Sneed plays with great confidence and swagger. He is a leader out there. He finds a way to make plays. Yes, it helps their offense to have those good WRs.BleedingBLue wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2019 3:50 pmIf Sneed is an All-American it will be partly because he is good, not great, and partly because his teammates make him look great. Re: QB Update
I'm all in on Rovig. There were 3-4 dropped slants yesterday that might have made a big difference. The 4th down pass to Kassis for our first TD was spot-on. I even think he ran semi-well a few times. Let's all sit back and enjoy as the kid matures into a solid Bobcat QB.
BTW WTH were we doing throwing such a tough pass on a 4th down early in a game instead of kicking a FG??????? If that didn't work everyone on this site would have been roasting Choate over a spit and rightfully so. I hated that call, but loved the outcome.

Re: QB Update
In a weird way, most of our receivers are kinda having a rookie year as well. It's the first year for almost all of them the Cats are attempting a legitimate passing game, not just a "keep 'em honest" pass attempt. Maybe some patience on that end of the ball as well. It's not like they've been catching McGhee or Prukop passes for three years.
