Mason and Groves

Post by profisme » Wed Oct 11, 2006 6:12 am

Today in the Chronicle Coach Kramer decides that Mason will get the start over Evin Groves at Sacramento. In my opinion, it is good news because it shows the team that those who produce will indeed get to play. I don't think Evin will be riding the bench, however, and he shouldn't. He was the starter at the beginning of the year and has shown he can be a very solid running back. Kudos to Kramer for sticking with the guy who has been hot.

I hope this is an attempt to keep Groves healthy, and bring him back slowly. Mason indeed has been a stud, but I would like Groves to get a shot to keep his job. You hate to punish a player for getting hurt while playing hard....once again, in a perfect world, what a one/two punch...two great backs that will stay fresh and hungry for playing time.

Exactly! It will not only help keep them healthy and fresh for the whole year, it will also keep the fire HOT on the competition between them to be the starter etc. I think we will get 110% from either one of them on every play the rest of the year! Again I go back to LDT in San Diego. He's an all pro back but loves it that he gets to share some time with Michael Turner for the Bolts as well. He said it will not only keep him fresher for late in the season, but also help extend his playing career. I totally agree. Havimg 2 stud backs with different styles can really help your team and show different looks to the defense so they can't get into a groove just stopping 1 back etc.

From the stand point of our O-line, do you guys think it is difficult/confusing blocking for two different backs with different running styles? Would they be doing anything different when Groves is in as opposed to when Mason is in?

I'm not sure I see a difference in their style of running. To me, both are very quick to the hole, can change direction in a heart beart and almost always make the first guy miss in open field.

What is it that I'm missing as a difference in style?

I think not. Both hit the hole FAST so you better get your butt onto your block or you might get a stinger in the back!

I think that Mason squares up better for the hole than Groves does, beyond that they are both studs. From a D standpoint I would be very concerned about both of them stuffing the ball down your throat. Now with Rolo at QB and the threat of long passes the D will have to sread the field more. Watch for a long running back touch down the weekend. Maybe 20 to 30 yards. :D

I really don't see that much of a difference in the two RB's. They both are extremely quick and hit the hole with energy.

I don't think it matters who starts. They will both get plenty of carries for the rest of the season. It is so nice to have two good running backs. I am quite sure we will need them both. It seems like 1aa football and the BSC especially comes down to who is healthy in November.

What a nice problem to have. I can remember years where the Cats didn't have 1 good back, let alone 2 very good ones. I prefer this...

And don't forget a hungry Taito, who will look forward to his opps to get in there and run hard.

A three headed monster!

Yep, Taito is young too and learning. We have 3 very talented RB's that will only get better each game! LOOK OUT!
