PSU Postgame Analysis

Post by bozbobcat » Sat Oct 07, 2006 6:42 pm

I guess I'll start the analysis, but I bet barechestcat will do the same when he gets back.

Offensively, the Cats did a very nice job today, given field conditions. Mason had an excellent game and got some very tough yards. Carpenter and Rolovich were both effective, and Wheaton had a good game save for a couple of drops. I wasn't too angry about drops today because a wet ball is always difficult to catch. The offensive line did a great job today. I don't remember the Bobcat quarterback getting sacked once.

Defensively, the Cats posted their best game since last year's Griz game. To me, Bobby Daly had an especially good game. I also thought the quarterback pressure was excellent. Anytime a team shuts out a potent offense like Portland State, something had to go right, and a lot of things went right. Ali is a good runner for PSU and the Cats held him to 80 yards.

The special teams did a good job holding on returns, and had a decent day, but I don't think they played a huge factor, given that there were 4 total kickoffs in the game. The punting by Rolovich and Bolton was effective.

Overall, there's not a whole lot that can be griped about after shutting out a nationally ranked opponent at home. What is more important is that the Bobcats stayed alive and well in the race for the Big Sky. This was a big win and I'm happy about it! Excellent work, Bobcats!

And on a side note, I spoke with a PSU fan (Sawyer Smith's dad) after the game and he really thought Bobcat Stadium was a good place to watch the game and MSU has good fans. I hope he enjoyed his trip here in Bozeman as did the other PSU fans who came to watch their team.

GO CATS!

Congrats on the win. Your D came through.

I personally am shocked about my team not being able to score. We need to regroup for our homes games next couple of weeks.

I thought todays game was one of the most complete games all season. We played well in all phases of the game, but I do have some complaints about the offense. Last week, we attacked DOWNFIELD. This week, we go back to the side to side crap. Until Rolovich came in, not one ball was thrown more than 8 yards. What gives? Is is a read that is made at the line of scrimmage? Does Carpenter come to the line and see the DB 8 yards off, so throw to the sideline? If that is the case, that is stupid. If it is a called play, it is really stupid. The INT Carpenter threw wasn't a terrible pass, more than anything it was a great play by the defender to get into position to make the play. Offensively, the CATS need to stretch the field. Our WR's are FAST. Let's go over the middle too. I would be amazed if the CATS ran 10 different plays all day.

We have all been saying it all year and just because MSU won today, we are being quiet about Bailey. The man has absolutely ZERO imagination.

All year long I have been a Carpenter supporter. After Rolovich came in and showed great composure, I have changed my mind. I think that Rolovich makes better reads. Even though he really puts some mustard on the ball, he actually looks to go downfield. I am afraid that being the starter now, Bailey will make Rolovich more conservative than he has been playing.

Please Mr. Bailey don't screw up Jack Rolovich!

I really would have like to seen one reverse. Their D-line was slanting to our run all game and we had them sealed down easily. I will say we stepped up big on the reverse they tried to run. I think it was Kory who came up and made a big stop.

This has to be one of the weirdest seasons in Bobcat football history. Today's team would have smoked Eastern Washington-I really believe that. We had a great pass rush all day-and the coverage down the field was amazing. Where was that in weeks 2-4?

PSU's quarterbacks are really struggling. Our defense was good-but man did those guys have a tough day. Their offense was light years from scoring today.

PSU's defense is very solid. Our offensive line was blowing big holes, but those holes always closed up real fast. Mason really had to earn all those yards. I kept expecting a big homerun type of run, but their linebackers and safeties never allowed that to happen. We had to methodically beat them.

Should have been at least 21-0 but I'm not greedy. 14-0 is okay with me.

TV Coverage said all their LB's run 4.4 40's. Two of them used to be safeties. In showed in how they covered the hole.

I agree, they were extremely fast, reminded me of defenses the CATS have had in the past 5 years. I was sometimes frustrated when we kept trying to run to the outside, Mason was good enough on sheer talent to get a few yards even most of those plays, however, I think we did much better running between the tackles right at them.

I agree it was an excellent game and a great day but I too noticed how we went to those side to side passes again frequently. Last week they did go downfield. We never get hardly any yards on those side to side passes. Why don't we go downfield more often. Especially on third down.

Also, there did seem to be a lot of confusion again in getting plays in on offense and defense. Hopefully they will continue to work on that. This shouldn't be happening this late in the season. Also, Rolo had to go to the sideline to get every play.

Overall though -good game!

Good win Cats. I predicted a 3 point game in the 30's. I can't figure you guys out this year. So my prediction for next weekend is you win or lose by a lot or a little to Sac St.
