GOOD News on Multiyear contracts...
Earlier in the spring many of us emailed and or called the Board of Regents asking them to allow for 3 year contracts to be offered to coaches at the University. This morning it was reported:
:The staff and compensation committee of the state Board of Regents on Wednesday recommended that three-year contracts be offered to head football and basketball coaches at Montana State University and the University of Montana..."
The Board must respond to the recommendation with a "yes" vote before it finalizes, but I think this is a great move in the right direction for the universities.

Re: GOOD News on Multiyear contracts...
I believe we should be able to offer 3 year contracts to caoches, but not automatic. It should be a reward for for success. Maybe performanced based, grad rates, win/loss, or wins vrs Griz. etc.catsrback76 wrote:Earlier in the spring many of us emailed and or called the Board of Regents asking them to allow for 3 year contracts to be offered to coaches at the University. I consider it more of a reflection of Montana's idiotic, reactive, non-progressive members of local government.bobcatgrad2005 wrote:I find it embarassing that we don't offer our coaches a minimal of 3 year contract. It is a reflection of the trigger happy fan base, who after a short loosing streak want to fire the coaches. Does that mean I am embarrassed by some of our fan base. I think it must...

The online version of the Chronicle is saying that it was APPROVED today by the Regents!

I like the idea of allowing 3 year contracts. It only makes the head coaching job more appealing and allows MSU to get qualified replacements for Kramer after the season. Unless one of these charts that I see is right and we win some more games this year.
Good luck Cats lets get some wins.

For those of us who know a bad coach when we see one, it would seem as if we're already stuck. Before I would have said yes, but to see the amount of people in here that turned on Kramer after a slow start I don't know now. Regents might be stuck with an unpopular coach some years and end up buying him out etc.

Is there a stipulation in this deal where a coach would have to pay back the money they've already earned if they leave before the contract is up? Say you've coached 2 out of the 3 years of the contract and decide to take a job at a bigger better school, supposedly you'd have to pay back all the money you made in the first two years of the deal. I could believe that our idiot regents would come up with some cockamamie scheme like that.
Kramer was eluding to this the other day. Said he'd have a hard time signing a deal structured like that. He'd rather brave the one year contracts.

It would definitely suck if that was how it applied. But I don't think personal services contracts work that way because it's too much like involuntary servitude. In effect, it would mean he worked those first two years for free just because he didn't stick around for the third year. I don't think that would fly.GavinDonos wrote:Say you've coached 2 out of the 3 years of the contract and decide to take a job at a bigger better school, supposedly you'd have to pay back all the money you made in the first two years of the deal.
