Scouts aren’t as successful as they make themselves sound. They miss in both directions. This is true from high school to the pros. Every sport. I’m sure there are players that didn’t even play in college that would have been good in the pros. There are players drafted that were stars in college simply because they were in the right system and had great players around them.
No kidding. I read that there are 14 players selected #1 overall in the draft that have made it to the NFL Hall of Fame, only 7 in the past 50 years. Obviously, that doesn’t mean the others didn’t have good careers, but the “best” college talent doesn’t always mean they will be the best NFL talent.
I arguably spent too long figuring this out.

7/50 is 14%, but we should probably take at least 10 years off of that because most of those guys in that time range retired yet.

7/40 is 17.5%, which honestly, is pretty good odds at a HOF career if you ask me! I’m surprised it’s that high.
I looked at the last 10 years (not including Cam Ward)

and out of those 10, Myles Garrett and Joe Burrow are both tracking for Hall of Fame careers.

Jared Goff has an outside shot.

So that’s 20% right there, and that’s without a real gauge on the last 3 previous drafts.

Throw in active Hall of Fame lock Matthew Stafford 16 years ago, that’s 3 out of the last 16 most likely in the Hall of Fame and some younger QBs still developing.

Those are great odds for drafting a Hall of Fame player. Actually quite remarkable.

The 1964 Draft had 10 Hall of Famers drafted, which is the most ever for one draft class. Their draft positions were 2, 3, 6, 11, 17, 18, 29, 88, and 89. Pick #89 was Bill Parcells who went in as a coach, so it was really only nine players from that class and that's the most ever. The 1984 and 1992 drafts both produced zero hall of fame players.

How many first pick busts have there been? Not including players that were injured, I'd guess it's about the same as the number that have landed in the HOF. Russell, KJ Carter, Carr, Couch off the top of my head. Depends on what you consider a bust, I guess, and those players may have just been in bad situations. Hard to say for sure, but you could also say that the ones that end up in the Hall were probably in good/better situations. Which isn't to say they wouldn't have been great despite that. Many, many players in the HOF that were on bad teams.

Anyway, Wehr is getting looks. I'm not sure how serious those looks are. NFL football is probably the worst at player development (farm system) of any of the four major American sports, so he has that working against him. Alex Singleton is an example of someone that probably didn't get a good look (did he?) and/or wasn't afforded some kind of development. Where would he have been drafted had NFL teams known what they know now?

You see baseball teams calling up 26-year-old rookies occasionally. How old was Singleton when he went up to the Eagles? Either way, it doesn't seem as common. Hopefully, Wehr can get on somewhere in another league and show off his strengths, if no one picks him up.

Singleton may be a good parallel here - went UDFA to Seahawks in 2015, not much of a chance really a camp body, released then to practice squads for the Vikings then Patriots, released by all 3. Likely would have been the end of the Pro road for him, IF it weren't for his Mom being Canadian that made him eligible for the 2016 CFL draft as a Canadian national - if he were an International player he likely would NOT have been added to a CFL team.

He became one of the all-time single season tackle leaders in Stamps history and in 3 years in the CFL won a Grey Cup, started in 3 Grey Cups, was CFL's Most Outstanding Player on defense, Canadian National MOP, and team MOP. This gave him visibility and an opportunity with the Eagles in 2018. The rest is history.

A bit mind boggling when you think about how many players are out there like Singleton - just not really given a chance. I don't think Alex would've made it in the NFL if it weren't for the idiosyncratic fact that his Mom is Canadian.

Marcus' mom is almost canadian. Joplin is only 40 miles south of Canada.
