Bobcats Portal History

Post by Lord Vigo » Wed Jan 08, 2025 8:25 pm

Looking back at the portal activity of recent seasons is helpful for keeping this week in perspective. This isn't exhaustive, but it's a pretty complete look at the most significant additions and losses.

Losses:
  • O. Aigbedio, OL > Baylor (2024)
  • S. Valdez, DT > Washington (2024)
  • R. Reimer, OL > Cal (2024)
  • I. Ifanse, RB > Cal (2023)
  • B. Glessner, K > UCLA (2023)
  • J. Kettells, OL > Kennesaw (2023)
  • T. Sessions, OL > Cal (2022)
  • C. Wood, OL > Missouri (2021)
Acquisitions:
  • A. Eckert, DT < WSU (2024)
  • R. Jones, HB < Maine (2024)
  • S. Ezekiel, OL < North Texas (2024)
  • D. Rollins, OL < BYU (2024)
  • R. King, WR < ECU (2024)
  • B. Hall, P < SMU (2023)
  • J. Davis, RB < Wisconsin (2023)
  • J. Alexander, WR < Washington (2023)
  • T. McCullouch, WR < CSU (2023)
  • D. Polidore, S < AF (2022)
  • C. Thomas, WR < Kentucky (2022)
  • R. Alston, WR < St. John's (2022)
  • S. Chambers, QB < Wyoming (2022)
Plus you have former JUCO guys like Jon Johnson, J.T. Reed, Cole Sain

Portal losses stink and they hurt, but there are always guys coming back the other way, and they're often significant. MSU has also absorbed the losses and continued to build the program. There isn't any reason to assume they're going to start going backwards now.

We're not getting FBS dropdowns because of the portal. FBS dropdowns to FCS have always been allowed, without penalty. The portal only provided a penalty-free path up from FCS to FBS.

The portal did add the ability to transfer across from FCS to FCS without penalty. But that rarely helps a top FCS team like the Cats. Rohan Jones and Marquis Johnson are the only 2 that come to mind right now.

When does the portal close?

The point is simply that the Cats have been able to mitigate losses with more/better transfers.

Got it. Sorry, just a personal issue i have with the portal getting too much credit for helping us as much as it hurts us. It really doesn't help us since the free path down to FCS was always there.
I'll shut up now.

Your point is well taken. However, I do think that the portal does truly give back somewhat in that players who move up take spots that would otherwise go to other players. That creates an excess at the FBS level that can trickle back down. FCS teams have more former FBS, JUCO, or even high school options.

The return is often 50 cents on the dollar, but it’s something.

That's a fair point, you're right.

I was going to say something similar. Sure, FBS players could always drop down and play immediately, but now that FCS players can move up and play immediately there are more FBS players that lose their spot, or anticipate that, so they move down.

Eastwood, did not make it. Ball out! Recovered, by Montana State!! The Bobcats hold!!! The Bobcats hold!!!

Also, I would bet that the portal had made dropdowns easier to find.

It’s pretty wild to see how successful this staff has been at bringing transfers in actually. Far more hits than misses, that’s for sure.

I would like everyone to remember that as many studs as we are losing, we have ALWAYS landed some great players from the portal. Just wait until some guys start getting offers and we start realizing that our coaches can bring in some great talent. Also a big reminder that we have plenty of young guys on this team that can and will step up.

My sense from most posts is frustration with all in, great fans, forever a Bobcat, then they leave. Just be honest while your here.. say it is my best opportunity and I'll give my all and reassess when the season is over. Then thank fans for their support but you have a better opportunity now available. It has become a business and job. So athletes and fans probably need to treat it that way.
