Credit to UC Davis on defense. Nobody has done that to us all year and they did it all game long. If they had a top-level FCS offensive line they would be a real problem.
Tommy had 3 carries for 4 yards which is a big anomaly and Taco’s punt return skewed the true offensive stats because the offense was cooking after it that for awhile.
They were good. We didn't hit many that got past the second level. They tackled well. Tommy maybe could have pulled it a few times. The meaningful stat is YPC. They held us down. And the 2 backs not named Davis were in the 3s or 4s per carry.
Yeah, Davis was solid against the run. I feel if the Cats get them again, some play-action passes early in the game will help against them stacking the box. The receivers were open all day and for a run-heavy offense, MSU has some very good wide-outs in Alexander, Dowler, and McCullouch.
I think if the game calls for it, the passing game can win as it did against New Mexico when it was needed.
Seattle to Billings to Missoula to Bozeman to Portland to Billings

Yep and it was good last night, not explosive but certainly solid. Couple balls that stand out were the 3rd down to Alexander on the left sideline and the throw to ty. And Tommy's escapability on the long one was impressive. He was going to run for that first down but then the db fell.

I thought UC Davis tackled exceptionally well. In other games, there were several runs that turned into big plays due to missed tackles, but that wasn’t the case against UC Davis.

UCD was good against the run overall but not against Julius Davis for some reason. I’d say that it was the best thing for MSU’s offense because they had to rely more on the pass and proved, especially in the first half, that they could beat teams just as bad without it.
MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

I think until Scottre got dinged he was also running well. Cats were getting 5-10 yard runs. But, UCD also created the 1 yd runs. Cats just didn't have those 20, 30, 50 yarders that increase overall yards and YPC.

Thankfully I don’t see anyone of the Griz d-line that weighs as much as a school bus.

How much of our "inability" to run the ball like usual was because we were up by 3 scores and they knew we weren't going to pass as much? If the game had been closer and they would have had to defend against the pass too, do you think maybe we bust a couple big ones?
