Another PWO QB?

Coaches are sure bringing in a lot of kids - although many PWO.
Qb room would have:
Tommy Mellott
Sean Chambers
Sean Austin
Jordan Reed
Luke Abshire
?Chace Pence?
Well, this is a bit of a head scratcher. Not sure the Cats needed another QB. His highlights don’t show any running ability, just throws. He has decent size (height), maybe he will be playing a different position. The Cats now have upwards of 36 commits and signees, with a possibility of more to come. That’s a pretty large class.
Build for the future. You never know who will retire, transfer or be out for a season.
Look at QB lineup in January 2022
Bauman Portal
Rovig retire to UI grad assistant position
Tommy injured
And that other guy, McKay, who entered the portal.

How often do you see the Cats with three true freshman QBs though? All three of those QBs didn’t have any other FCS offers. Obviously, one QB (Reed) probably didn’t have offers because of Covid limitations and is a gray shirt. They may surprise us all in the future but I still think there are bigger needs elsewhere on the team. PWOs don’t cost much but still take up a roster spot. Only a few weeks left until Fall camp. Coaches know better than all of us, but it’s still a head scratcher for me.

This isn't just a Vigen thing. FCS coaches have been doing this for a while with their fall rosters. Roster spots are fluid...especially in the fall when it comes to walk-ons. "Taking up a spot" doesn't really happen in this scenario because that "spot" for a scholarship kid or transfer will always be open if the coaches deem it a need.

I see what you're saying... but that just seemed like such a fluke the way things turned out. I'm not an insider by any means but I talk to enough people about the program and from what I recall - here is how things were set up heading into the season.

KcKay was coming in to challenge for Qb1 and did well enough to dethrone Rovig, who was good enough to get us to the semis the year before. Then I heard rumblings that Rovig had moved down a rung or two, and not because he regressed but rather Bauman had stepped up his game... and so had Thielen, so some were saying Rovig was 4th string... and way down on the list was that new kid Tommy. LOL

Sounds good, but for every Perkins brother you have a Dylan Rollins or Bruin Fleischman. Both Dylan and Bruin had MSU offers but signed elsewhere even though their brothers were/are at MSU. Logan Frederickson signed with MSU even though his brother plays for ISU. Time will tell, I guess.

It's in interesting discussion. I remember driving to SLC from MT to catch a flight to Frisco..... we listened to a lot of podcasts along the way. Colter more than hinted that TM might not be the MSU QB for the next three years. Don't get me wrong, I love the way he plays and I think he's a stud. I also don't agree that he's just a running QB or even a run first QB. Kid has a damn good arm. We'll see.

About that arm? I re-watched all the playoff games and I never saw him throw a ball more than 35 yards. Maybe I missed it or maybe he didn't have to but if that continues safeties will start playing much shorter in coverage.

Not disagreeing that Tommy doesn't throw deep that often. However, the first play of the 2022 spring game was a 40 yard completion from Tommy to Ravi Alston that traveled 40 yards in the air. Actually, I'd go as far to say that Tommy has the weakest arm of the four QBs in that spring game (Tommy, Sean Chambers, Jordan Reed, and Sean Austin). Tommy compensates with his running ability, ability to throw accurately on the move, overall accuracy, execution of the offense, and, above all else, ability to lead.

But to put some respect on Tommy's arm, he can throw a fastball when necessary and his deep balls are very catchable (has that Russell Wilson loft).

Neither Pence nor Tuski show up on the roster, but they both still have MSU on their Twitter pages. That could mean they will be coming in as gray shirts next year, the roster still isn't complete, or they aren't coming at all.

If he is a walk on, he wouldn't be on the roster until school starts would he?

Quite possible, but most of the PWOs are already on the roster. Zachary Dodson-Greene and Zac Waible also aren't on the roster. Don't know for sure.

No surprise here. This pretty much finishes the known recruits.

https://247sports.com/college/illinois/ ... 188237867/

Since there are only a few days left before Fall camp, unless there are some major surprises, it looks like we have probably have a final roster. I’m a bit surprised there weren’t any other defensive line signees but that’s the way it goes.

True Freshman who are on the travel roster (based on OSU and EWU games):

QB Luke Abshire (likely out of need due to the health at the position)
WR/RS Taco Dowler
WR Christian Anaya
S Caden Dowler
K/P Casey Kautzman
OL Conner Moore
TE Rylan Schlepp
