Lulay Invited To NFL Combine

Post by wbtfg » Fri Jan 06, 2006 9:20 am

I wonder if Bolton got an invite.

Lulay invited to NFL Combine

By TIM DUMAS, Chronicle Sports Writer

Former Montana State quarterback Travis Lulay has been invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, the two-time all-Big Sky Conference performer confirmed on Thursday.

"I'm pretty excited about it," he said from Irvine, Calif., where he is working out and is expected to sign with an agent as early as today.

The Combine will be held on Feb. 22-28 in Indianapolis with the NFL Draft slated for April 29-30 in New York. Lulay heard he was going to be included just before Christmas and received his official invite just after.

Lulay finished his four-year career by helping Montana State defeat rival Montana in November, but suffered an ankle injury in the second half, which he says is now "90-95 percent" healed.

He last played on Dec. 24 in the inaugural Magnolia Classic in Jackson, Miss. The game pitted Division I-A all-stars against a team made up of players from Division I-AA, II and NAIA schools. Lulay's team was on the losing side of a 17-9 decision. He completed eight of 14 passes, with one interception, for 90 yards.

Lulay is projected as a fifth-round pick by nfldraftscout.com, which rated him ninth out of 79 quarterbacks. Eastern Washington's Erik Meyer is ranked 14th and has also been invited to the Combine, which will be crawling with NFL scouts.

"I can't put too much stock in this," Lulay said. "For a small-school guy like myself, to show what I can do in front of all those scouts, it's a good opportunity for me."

Lulay left as Montana State's career leader in passing yards (10,746), attempts (1,559) and completions (889). His 12,205 total yards are also a school mark and was second in Big Sky Conference history.

Lulay also finished 15th all-time in rushing yards, with 1,459, the most ever by an MSU quarterback.

He became only the fourth Bobcat to defeat Montana three times and joins Dennis Erickson as MSU quarterbacks to lead the school to three Big Sky crowns.

Projected to be a fifth round pick and ninth overall and ahead of Meyer? That's impressive. Obviously the scouts like his physical presence. The guy is a horse.

I wouldn't put too much stock into that. There were draft services last year that had cooper as a 3rd round pick. I still think that Bolton will get drafted on the 2nd day, and Lulay will get a shot as a free agent.

Speaking of Jeff Bolton - did I read somewhere that he won the Rimington Award for best 1-aa Center? If so, that is a pretty big deal. The Rimington Award for best 1-a center is a tremendous honor, and a few years ago, they started giving them to the best 1-aa Center also.

I would've hoped we would have heard something official from MSU if he won.

Good luck to TL. He deserves this. As does Meyer. I hope they both do well.

I am sorry I never got to see this young man play. From all the things I read and heard he sounded like a terrific player, student, and person. I like his chances with those qualities. Good luck Travis Lulay!

I was looking at the list from I-AA.org and I didn't see Bolton on the combine list. It said there are some late additions and whatnot so I hope he gets an invite.

I'd like to see Travis get a shot at the NFL. He showed by his play that he is a true leader and competitor. He just never quit or gave up and I think the scouts will like that. Didn't the OSU coach compare him to Elway?

Hey, does anyone know if the combine will be televised live on NFL Network, like the last few years?

He's not on the list. He will be playing in the All American Classic on the 14th of January. Scouts for the pro teams will be there to check out the talent.

I just heard on the sporting news that this years draft is down in QB's after Leinart, possibly Young and the QB from Vandy. Maybe Travis can really show em something at the combine!

If Travis can have an excellent combine, I could see him as a second day pick. He has an NFL arm and can scramble very well. At the very least a team may want him to run the scout team for a year because of the trend towards mobile QBs in the NFL.
