MSU Sagarin Ratings

Post by SonomaCat » Sun Dec 18, 2005 8:00 pm

I think this is a good time to begin to track our standing in the Sagarin Ratings, as I'm confident that this will be the low point of the season. From here on out, we can watch the week over week improvement.

As of today (12/18/05), here is how we rate out:

Ranking: 244 (out of 334 D-1 teams)
Strength of Schedule Ranking: 198
Record 1-5

Note: The Sags don't count non D-1 games, so we catch a break as our loss to Alaska-Fairbanks doesn't count against our ranking or our SOS ... and our two NAIA games don't count against our SOS. So both our overall ranking and our SOS per the Sags are actually inflated quite a bit at this point.

Jeff Sagarin has a good system. (He actually had the Cats one position above the Griz in 2005 Football and I trust that.) Let's see: so far in pre-BSC basketball play Montana is #91 & the Cats are #244.
So both our (Bobcat) overall ranking and our SOS per the Sags are actually inflated quite a bit at this point.
And your point is? Probably that anywhere up is good?

The point is the 'Cats are worse than their Sagarin rating would indicate. This point is clear from BAC's post. He is saying the Bobcats are worse than their Sagarin rating would indicate, and he is a Bobcat fan.

Reading Comprehension isn't taught at UM? Must not be, but it is obvious that Insert Foot 101 is a required course.

My dear fellow. I submit that reading comprehension my not be a strong point for me, but do not slander UM where we have produced some 28 Rhoads Scholars, 39 Fulbright and 6 Pulitzer Prize winners.

The operative words in his posting are enboldened for your pleasure. My point was, sir, quietly implied, that his hopes were for an improvement. And, judging from the Bobcat record thus far, I pray that he is correct. A win for a Montana school, albeit even by State, is a win for all Montanans.

Yes to both ... I hope to see improvement from here, and our current awful ranking is actually skewed in our favor.

These Ken Pomeroy ratings seem somewhat solid, and make interesting predictions. Does anyone really believe that the Bobcats will match his prediction of an 11-16 record with a 6-8 conference record? I know we've started slowly, but I still think things will turn around.

GO CATS!

How many Rhodes Scholars though? :)

I'm sorry if I was a tad tense, but it seems we can't have a single Bobcat post go by without some loudmouth Griz fan giving their two cents. I digress...

Oops. We actually slid one spot after the Portland win. Turns out that Portland is really bad, and removing the point spread for home court advantage, we lost to them.

New MSU Ranking: 245 (of 334)
New MSU SOS: 243

Note: Portland's Ranking is 244.

Big jump for the Cats in the Sag ratings after beating Denver.

Previous Ranking: 245
Current ranking: 212
Jump of 33 spots.

Previous SOS: 243
Current SOS: 245
Drop of 2 spots.

Sidenote: The Griz are up to 65, which is quite impressive and good for the conference.

New rating as of today:

245

New SOS as of today:

278

The Griz are up around 70, and PSU is around 100, so we will have an opportunity during conference to "play up a level" and maybe make up some ground with some wins.

The homestand helped a little. New rankings as of 1/3/06:

Ranking: 226

SOS: 314 (out of 334)

I guess those of us who, when the schedule first came out, called this a really, really weak schedule might have been on to something. If our D-II and NAIA games counted in the Sags, we might have nabbed the prize for very worst schedule in the country.

I was reading an interesting story where the Big Sky Commisioner, a guy named Doug Fullerton, was lamenting his displeasure with the weak non conference schedules by the BB teams in the BSC Conference. He went on to say that the current RPI ratings will actually drop when Big Sky Conference league play begins. I am not sure how all this RPI stuff works, but can someone who knows help me out here.
