That's one of my biggest beefs with our zone thus far; too many times guys are looking at other guys as if "I thought YOU had him...".
Is Austin going to get ripped by Pete or Mike if he actually jumps that guy or route in that situation? I'd rather our guys screw up covering SOMEBODY than covering a SPOT, especially at the goal line.

1> Those PF penalties I blame on being undisciplined - which is a coaching thing.19CAT wrote:Just a few things I noticed...
1. Ricky Gatewood IS the best reciever in the Big Sky.
2. Offense seems to be jelling a little bit better.
3. Justin Domineck played his best game so far as a cat.
4. The stupid penalties have to stop...and I mean now. There is know way we should average 2 PF a game, that is just stupid and shows a lack of dicipline.
4B. The refs need to blow the whistle to end the play. Hey stripes that means every play. We counted this week and might be off by 1 or 2 but we got 22 plays that ended with out a whistle. Jesus why don't we just get a few 8 th graders to come and do it.
5. The pass defense is really improving when you consider all the injuries. Our pass defense is starting to limit the short outs, at the right time and theyt are are getting the recivers passed off from zone to zone 100% better.
6. Run defense is still bend don't break mode, but I can't figure out why. When every person in the stadium knows they are going to run I don't know why are backers are stepping back at the snap and then filling the holes. I do which we would blitz a little more.
7. Can we have a game where we don't have to compalin about our kicker. I think that is going to be what I ask Santa for this year.
What was everybody elses observations???
2> Kick the PAT when up by 9 - always...Never go for 2 until you absolutely need to - you don't ever need to until the 4th Qtr.
3> If Bailey can't get a play in within 15 seconds, then just let Lulay call his own plays.
4> I think the team is improving on both sides of the ball every week.
5> I guess I'm still not sold on the 3-4...I forgot to really pay attention, but what was the difference between the 1st half and the 2nd as far as stopping ISU's running? I noticed most of the sweeps in the 2nd half, the backers were just flying up field to blow up the blocking, and then everything just got stacked up.
6> No, that was not a pass rush you saw. That was good coverage downfield that caused incompletes.
Montana State IS what "they" think Montana is.

Along the lines of the delay in getting the offensive play in was the number of times the D was looking at the side for the call while ISU was standing over the ball. It wouldn't take a very astute coach to drill his guys all week on breaking the huddle, running to the ball and going on a quick snap count... while we're still trying to get the defense called.

I think he just needed to get a little more depth as the guy ran through the zone. Austin almost tipped that pass.tetoncat wrote:I read a quote from Kramer in the Tribune and he said there was no way we were kicking to their return guy. After the first kick I saw why. I think we were squibbing on purpose and with the holder having the ball it was affecting what we did. Also if you try to squib to the sidelines, there is a chance it will go OB. Just like lulay's last punt. He tried to go to the side on a short field and ended up pushing it out at the 30.
I was in the endzone and on the TD that Austin gave up, he did not bite to the outside, he just played to a spot and then let the guy go expecting someone else to cover the inside. From the look on his face, you could tell he though someone was going to be there. This has happened a lot, and we need someone to fill that middle quicker to avoid giving up those 15-20 yard passes.

Regarding 1/2 time adjustments on the run, the coaches must have seen a tendency on ISU's part when lined up in certain formations because they shifted the linebackers to one side in certain sets. This gave them a overload to that side and helped a lot.
I don't know if we'll see a lot of sacks this year from our D line that aren't coverage sacks. They are all taking on a lot of double teams due to that type of defensive set. But, this is how it is supposed to be. I did see a lot more blitzing in passing situations. There were times when I saw safety blitzes, lb blitzes and combinations where more then one player was coming.
I was told that the defense has definitelly taken on a bend but don't break attitude on purpose this year. I hope that Pete sees the success of timely pressure and does it a little more often.

They did finally blitz a little this game. But with the 3-4 you have to blitz every passing down. That is the defense in a nut shell they aren't supposed to know where the 4th and sometimes 5th rushers are coming from, hence don't shoe it before the snap. You can have everybody faking it but until the snap don't let them know for sure. After the ball is snapped and the Oline is engaged it is harder for them to pick up the blitz because of everything else going on.
There was one play that we had I think Marudas and Force blitz at the same time and from the same side. The QB basically did the OH Sh*t and threw the ball away because he saw the writing on the wall, and didn't want to be on the wall himself.

I have always loved the corner blitz, and Austin loves to hit, why don't we send a corner on a weak side blitz every now and then?
Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

Our entire secondary likes to hit, just ask any WRs that have played us this year.grizzh8r wrote:I have always loved the corner blitz, and Austin loves to hit, why don't we send a corner on a weak side blitz every now and then?

Couldnt agree more! Our secondary has been straight up murdering wr's this year, I love it! So far the best hit of the year had to be the last play of the ISU game, that reciever just got destroyed!!! Go Cats!CelticCat wrote:Our entire secondary likes to hit, just ask any WRs that have played us this year.grizzh8r wrote:I have always loved the corner blitz, and Austin loves to hit, why don't we send a corner on a weak side blitz every now and then?

There were 4 hits in that ISU game that made a person just say, "Damn that had to hurt!". LeBlanc had is hit on the QB, Toph had his shot on the WR, Ryan Force had his shot on their WR going across the middle, and Jason Gathing had his on the kickoff return that their TE took. We are not afraid to hit this year.

That hit across the middle had our receiver spitting blood for the rest of the game. He came back in right before halftime, but didn't play a play in the 2nd half. I watched it again and he just flat out got drilled. I can't believe he held onto the ball. Hopefully you guys didn't bang us up to bad to take care of Montana this weekend.

We knew going into this year we had some special ballplayers--I still can't believe how good the ISU team is developing and how tough their skill kids are
And how about how young they are? Looks real good down the road for both programs, and I think you'll put a real hurt on the Fizzlies. Hope our kids stay focused on Weber and aren't looking forward to PSU.
