Dear Friend and Colleague,
Hi! I am writing today to ask for your support of the Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp that serves children and adults with significant disabilities. Please join Tom and I at two fun events this October.
This past summer 500 kids and adults came to camp. For many, this is the first time they have rode a horse, fished, paddled a canoe. Last summer, a young boy from a foster home in Idaho with no limbs experienced all of these joys and more and CNN came to film his time at camp. For kids with severe autism we use visual communication systems so they can understand. We make the adaptations needed to let everyone participate.
Not only do the kids benefit, but young adults are transformed every year by this program. We recruit and send 200 Portland State University seniors to the camp for two weeks as camp counselors. Students majoring in all fields from Engineering to Music have their first experience learning that persons with significant challenges are people with the same quirks and courage as anyone else. Every year these young citizens, who are the next generation of our community’s leaders, tell me “…. this is one of the hardest things I have ever done, but it is also one of the best learning experiences I have ever had…”.
Have at look at the camp here: www.mhkc.org
We must increase the funds supporting this camp right now, this fall, in order to keep it alive. The situation is urgent. I have two fun October events to tell you about. The first is a chance to enjoy some great blues on the rooftop of Yamhill Market downtown. Come shake your booty with me, or just listen to the great music. The second is a PSU football game. How I would love to see you at these events. And please, ask your other friends and family to come too and help the camp.
