CATS new signings.

Post by CARDIAC_CATS » Wed Aug 11, 2004 1:15 pm

Looks like we signed a LB and WR from California and gave some walk ons 2 scholarships at TE. Was hoping there might be a OL in there somewhere. Oh well, maybe they will land someone by camp here shortly.

Wesley Mauia is a 6-1, 235 lb. middle linebacker out of Stockton, CA (Edison HS). This summer Mauia has stock that is rising. With offers from several schools, one thing Mauia is looking for is a community of Polynesian athletes in college.

Mauia has excellent instincts and is a hard hitter--during this past spring at the Nike combine in Palo Alto, Mauia ran the 40 in 4.6 (on grass), in addition to a bench max of 315 and a squat max of 450. His best vertical is 27.

Last season at Edison, Mauia posted 120 tackles, two picks and four sacks--add in one forced fumble.

"I love playing football", Mauia told Realdawg.com, "I love to hit and am very aggressive. If I get a shot at the quarterback I just want to hit him hard and I don't miss. I get real excited when I see that opportunity."

Right now, Mauia has offers from Washington, USC, Colorado and Nevada.

"I would like to go to college somewhere where there are a lot of Polynesian athletes. My family came here from Samoa in 1999 so I haven't been here very long."

While Mauia claims no favorites, he still has a liking to the hometown Trojans, "I would they're one of my favorites", Mauia said, "I also like Miami, Washington, Oregon, Tennessee and Colorado."

Mauia says he wants to take all five visits and won't be ready to make any decision until later in the fall or winter.

At risk of being a sugar coater, these pickups sounds awesome! Kramer has had pretty good luck lately picking up some late summer pick ups. Sounds like they had very good interest from the elite colleges so I'm curious as to why they fell through the cracks? Of course though after meeting Kramer, how can you not like the guy :)

As I recall, Kenny Qualls was a summer signee. He had a pretty decent career and-oh yeah, a fairly nice final home game his senior season.

But I, as with many you, are concerned about our o-line. Hope the new/young guys had a great summer.

SCOTT MANSCH's take on the signings

Little info I hear:

Of the true freshman , Ouilhon, Beniger and Lulay are the guys they feel may have a chance to play as true freshman.

In the spring Kramer basically was going to sign Mike Brown or Tyler Lulay as a freshman wide reciever. He signed Lulay, but Brown was still available late this summer and went ahead to sign him.

Maui, may have a little school work to get done before he's eligible.

I wish that the press releases on the new recruits would list what they are planning on studying as well as any academic honors. Apparently this Michael Brown kid is a pretty smart guy who is looking to study something in the engineering department (I think Computer Science).

MSU is obviously a very strong academic institution, and I wonder how much our coaches push that when they're out on the road recruiting.
