Final thoughts on the game!
We are the real deal, I believe. Our defense will be very good against 1-AA opponents. OSU had a few "athletic" plays against our D, but we were in good position all day. The corners were vastly improved! Great to have Kahiam back! Travis was his usual "gutty" self against a tough "D in a tough environment. Lots of promising potential. Hope we can take the next step against Stephen F. Austin. I am driving 400 miles to watch it, even with these gas prices! We whould definitely move up in the rankings! I thought our players and coaches should be very proud of the job they did in Stillwater!

My take from LISTENING to the game:
Our defense showed they once again could be at the top of the BSC. It sounded like Hunter played really well, which will help out the whole secondary. Our DL sounded like it answered all the uncertainties. Our LBs are as good as advertised.
I do wonder how good the OSU offense is. I realize they are Big 12, but this was their first game with this offense and they had a lot of new young faces. They will probably continue to get better as they become comfortable with it. One thing is for sure. We won’t see another team with so many talented athletes.
Our offense had some real good drives. We started most of them with our backs against the wall. I think if we would have started our drives closer to midfield, we could’ve seen a few more points. This game proved to me what I have been saying that there isn’t an I-AA team that can stop our O. The OSU defense will be the toughest we see. One of the OSU coaches said before the game that this will be their toughest non-conference game. I think they will roll all over Florida Atlantic.
Once again Lulay showed the country he is one of the best in the country at his position, regardless of level. He deserves all the preseason nominations that he has received. Any college in the country would be lucky to have such a general leading them as we do.
Our offense will get a real chance to show itself this Saturday. I don’t think 50+ points is out of the question. I can also see our defense holding SFA to less then 20. Unless our running game is clicking, then it will probably be 35 to 10. Because SFA won’t get many touches.
We made some mistakes that you could say cost us the game, but we will correct them this week. Even if we made all the same mistakes in the next game, we could still win easily. That’s just how good we are.
We didn’t get a real good look at our return game, but it will be there when needed. I think Murray will return one before conference. And I thought Bass was going to return punts? Maybe this week.
I like how Kramer called himself out during the post-game. He basically said if he doesn’t screw it up we will be there at the end. Kramer didn’t sound overly enthused of Guinn’s play, even though it sounded like a great game for him. I think that slot position is supposed to get open early to offset the blitzes. That’s probably where we missed Gatewood the most. Somebody mentioned his explosiveness. He has such good acceleration that a quick pass to him and he’s off to the races. Guinn is not that type of receiver. He’s the kind that can pick a zone apart. Find a whole and sit. Plus he’s a little taller so he can go over a CB as well.
Last point: We should all get used to teams coming after Lulay. Blitz, blitz, blitz……until are running game comes around, which I think will be sooner then later.

I would not be overly disapointed to see the CATs run the ball more against SFA. We need to establish something so that teams will quit pinning their ears back. I think that JD and MB will both be able to get some quality yards behind our experienced o-line. We know what Lulay brings to the table. I just hope he doesn't get killed trying to carry the team.

Obviously we are concerned about the tremendous amount of pressure OSU got on #14 yesterday BUT
A) It was game #1; I'm confident that our prep in weeks to come will focus more on not only picking up the blitz better, but ATTACKING it as well; make our opponents PAY for opening up the secondary.
B) The combination of size, speed, and strength that OSU possessed at D-line & Linebacker will not be seen again this season. NO IAA team is going to have that many monsters throwing themselves at Travis down after down. TL had a pretty decent game despite the immense pressure; I bet his stats will compare favorably with a # of OSU's Big 12 opponents as the year goes on.
C) Our running game was really a none factor; I'm not really sure why that was as it seemed Bass really started to click in the 2nd quarter. Kramer's post-game comments acknowledged this but also that JD is better at picking up the blitz (how could you tell THAT by listening?). I'm sure we'll see much more emphasis on the running game in the coming weeks; we KNOW we're going to be able to throw but the threat of a solid ground game SHOULD keep defenses a bit more honest.
D) The guys getting PAID saw/heard all the same things we did and I'm confident that they will develop a solid plan AND that we have the athletes (and the heart) to carry them out.
How long has it been since we've felt this positive following an opening game loss? Too long for my liking, but I think 2005 is going to be special...
Gentlemen, we have ourselves a football team.
