FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) - Atlanta Falcons rookie linebacker Jordan Beck will likely go on the injured reserve list this week with a foot injury, effectively ending his season.
Beck, a third-round draft pick from Cal Poly, tore a ligament at the base of his left toes as he returned an interception in the fourth quarter of Atlanta's 23-7 victory at Jacksonville last Thursday.
"It's unfortunate that he got hurt making a good play like he did, especially," coach Jim Mora said Sunday. "The guy just was everything we thought he'd be when we drafted him."
Beck led the Falcons in tackles in two preseason games. He was expected to back up middle linebacker Ed Hartwell, but undrafted rookie Antoine Cash will hold that job when Atlanta (3-1) ends the preseason Thursday at Miami (1-3).
The Falcons could wait until Tuesday, the deadline for NFL teams to reduce rosters to 65 players, before putting Beck on injured reserve. The team said he faces surgery and will visit a foot specialist Thursday in Charlotte, N.C.
