Desin did not look like a walk-on, or a football player hoping to play basketball. He really looked like a legit D-1 freshman basketball player. He looked better than I thought he would have looked. For selfish reasons, I am disappointed, but two sports is tough and I completely understand. I will say this though it is a lot easier to be a two sport athlete when both sports are winning.
It is hard to be too diappointed, though, is still a Bobcat and we will be posting about him for a very long time hear.
Thanks for giving it a try Mark!!

Has Desin now lost his Red-Shirt year for Football by playing Basketball? Seems like for the NCAA you have to red-shirt across the board or it's not for any.
Maybe that is the case for Desin, that if he played more than 4 games or so, the year counted as a normal year for Football (thus Kramer who pays the scholarship would not be to happy?).

No he does not lose his football redshirt year. It is hard to be a two sport athlete in college and keep your grades up. Not taking anything away from Mark but I think he is a competitor and only getting maybe 5 minutes of time a game probably was grating on him a little and he was brought here for football, so I wish him the best of luck.

No he did not lose a year of football elligiblity. The way the NCAA currently views it an athlete has 4 years of elligiblity in any sport to use in five consecutive years. There are plenty of examples in D-1 where an athlete has used up his four years in one sport only to play a fifth year in another (granted they did not redshirt) Essentually his elligiblity start in ALL sports the day he starts classes. Desin does have 4 years of football elligiblity right now, 4 years of track elligiblity but only 3 years now of elligiblity in basketball. All of his elligiblity will expire after the 2011-012 year. There are a lot of football players who play track on a redshirt year or after their senior year. There is also a trend to have a 6-7ish power forward to play a year at Tight end for football after they completed their basketball elligiblity.BobcatLionFan wrote:Has Desin now lost his Red-Shirt year for Football by playing Basketball? To make things more complicated their are "hardship" waivers that will grant a 6th year (still only 4 years of elligiblity) Former bobcat basketball players Ryan Holmes, and Luke Anderson were both granted them in the last 4 months. They are very difficult to obtain, though.

I'm fairly positive Murphy greyshirted his first year which would not lose him a year of eligibilty...someone may need to correct me on that.vike_king wrote:Isn't that how Mike Murphy was able to play this year also?profisme wrote:Criag Ochs is also a very prominent figure to have gotten a 6th year.

So what position is Desin going to play? A WR corp of Desin, Lulay, Green, Brown, Lewis, Bolton and Toliver sounds like a pretty lineup to me. Add Jamelle Banks and Joe Roberts to the list, too.

Interesting question. If he could play safety, that position has lots of openings for someone fast (just needs to hit the weight room). Could be a four year starter like Kane was.CelticCat wrote:So what position is Desin going to play? If it's WR, Lewis, Toliver, and Lulay probably leads the list returning. Maybe a transfer. Green has speed. Bolton actually does great (if you don't look at the body shape). Brown????, not sure
But Desin could easily fit in there.

That is correct. The decision on the red-shirt came after his first year at UM. He had 3 years at CU and 2 at UM.profisme wrote:My bad, he was granted the medical redshirt after having played 2 games during his true junior year at CU. It memory serves me correctly, didn't the powers that be grant him that medical redshirt year after his senior year at UM?
