To mimic the earlier "Fire Kramer.. or not" thread, I have to think our special teams played extremley well this weekend. Even the roll punt!

Re: MSU Special Team Suck... Oh Wait....
They have been improving quite a bit the last couple weeks. Just one bad punt for Cat/Griz other than that they were pretty darn good as well. We will need every ounce of effort again from our specials teams units in order to win this weekend at APP. State!. It sure makes a difference when you're not punting from your own 20 all game long. We owned the field position the whole game. The roll punt is great when punting near mid-field.
Also, great kick and punt coverage. A long punt return and a long kickoff return. A blocked punt, a fumble recovery on a kickoff. Other than one botched snap on a field goal attempt special teams was darn near perfect.

While it was great to see how well the special teams did, I will say that I think the biggest reason the roll punt worked so well was because we were playing a team that hadn't seen it the past 3+ years and knew how to defend it. Bolton had one that again barely got over the line, if that had been a conference game where they always overloaded the right side it would have had a very good chance of being blocked again.
That said, I am glad that at least we don't employ this new punt blocking scheme of taking so many guys off the line and letting the D come running at full speed through to pick up right by the punter like Furman. I have seen several other college teams do this (Louisville I think is one) and it scares me almost as much as the roll punt!

I agree it's a bad blocking scheme. It also looks like it takes three guys out of your punt coverage-or at least gives them a late start.kmax wrote:That said, I am glad that at least we don't employ this new punt blocking scheme of taking so many guys off the line and letting the D come running at full speed through to pick up right by the punter like Furman. I agree. Giving enough time, a good coach will dream up a play to block our punts. Furman did not have the time.kmax wrote:While it was great to see how well the special teams did, I will say that I think the biggest reason the roll punt worked so well was because we were playing a team that hadn't seen it the past 3+ years and knew how to defend it.
