Arapahoe, Grandview, Horizon, Legacy and Smokey Hill all had their varsity teams at the University of Northern Colorado's first annual team football camp last week.

Dan Raunig was one of the top performers at UNC's team camp.
Dan Raunig, from Mountain Vista High, was another camper in attendance. He joined a "Renegade Team" which was comprised of players from a number of different states including Texas, Nebraska and Colorado.

At the end of the three and a half day full contact camp, Northern Colorado assistant coach and camp director Darrell Perkins presented Raunig with "special merit recognition" for exemplifying excellence with his "outstanding play, work ethic and attitude".

"It was a real honor to be recognized by the coaching staff of UNC with such quality players on my team and with over 350 players there," Raunig stated. "It just capped off an awesome camp to be recognized like that."

Raunig's success at the camp would surprise few who have seen him play the last two seasons. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., standout has racked up 208 tackles in 20 games. He has twice earned first-team all-league honors and was also named second-team all-state as a junior in 2005.

"I have a knack for knowing where the ball is going to be," expressed the 5-foot-9, 196-pound linebacker. "I have good field awareness and good lateral speed."

Carroll College of Montana, Northern Colorado, Wyoming and Montana are some of the programs that have shown early interest in Raunig.

"I'd love to go to Montana State," he said. "My parents attended MSU, my cousin (Nick Morasko) played football there and both my grandparents still live in Montana. I also love Montana and want to live there after college.

"It would also be a great opportunity to go to UNC or maybe Carroll College because I have a lot of family that goes there."

Raunig recently tested out with a 315 pound bench max and a 585 pound squat max. In the classroom, he currently carries a 3.3 GPA and he received a qualifying score on the ACT.

I think it would be a shame if Dan Raunig didn't get a shot to play for the 'Cats. Any time I see an article on him three characteristics always come up: his attitude, his ethic, and his mindblowing play. If he plays his guts out like that in highschool, just think how hard he'd play for his favorite childhood team, the 'Cats.

I don't see why this kid should end up anywhere else. But then again, as fans we've all seen MSU crap on opportunity's face many-o-times in the past. Hopefully Krames will deem him worthy of a ride.

Looks like a nice little recruiting battle between the cats and the bears. If he's smart, he'll make his way here to Greeley.

From what I have heard from sources in Colorado, it is about 90% sure that Dan Raunig will be a Bobcat unless something startling happens between now and the signing period.

I agree. MSU should get anyone who wants to be a Bobcat, and he'll be a good one, almost like a throwback to the Sonny Holland era.

GO CATS!
It's always a good day to be a Bobcat fan! :) =D^ \:D/

Size-wise Raunig reminds me of the MLB from NAU a few years back who went on to make the roster for Dallas for a couple years. Damn he was good, bugs me that I can't recall his name. Anyone know who I'm talking about?

This is definitely what we need in the program. A lot like the Bobby Howard signing. Kids who grow up wanting to come to MSU. Heck, this kid didn't even list MSU as being interested, but still said they were his first choice. I also like the guys who are maybe a bit undersized, but have a nose for the ball and the heart of 2.

His comments/stats in the article also reminded me of an "undersized" linebacker Cat fans should be familiar with: Mac Mollohan.

Here is a little sample of the way Raunig hits....which was posted on another thread here. It is a good sampling of what kind of football Raunig and his teamates play down in Colorado. Watch Raunig's hit about 30 seconds into the clip! Jeeezuuusss!
