Early signing period Starts today

Post by mslacat » Wed Nov 08, 2006 10:21 am

I have beaten this house enough, but the early signing period starts today November 8th and extends to November 16th. While I mainly harp on Mens basketball the signing period applies to almost all NCAA sports except Football, so this is a very important week for all of the MSU coaches......... Except Kramer who is taking the week off

Today's Chronicle mentioned that Howard and Edwards will sign today and MSU maybe signing one or two others this week. I am not sure how we will have two more unless we get another scholarship from someone leaving, but it's exciting to hear that we have options. Huse is looking for another JC transfer it sounds like as we will only have ONE junior next year(Schultz).

The truth is with the current roster of players we only have three scholarships to offer. Quite frankly it does not surprise me that we may sign more than three, but in order to do so one of our existing under classman players will not be back. I will say there is about a 60% chance that a player will choose not to return, and 40% that Huse may cut someone. After his first full year as head coach he will want to make some adjustment.

Has anybody heard anything on if we signed any other JC or high school students besides the 2 mentioned in the chronicle article?

Just the two so far- here's the latest info.

BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Montana State added front-line depth Wednesday,
and didn't have to travel far to do so. Great Falls High standout Bobby
Howard and Butte High star Jeff Edwards signed National Letters-of-Intent to
join the Bobcat program on Wednesday, the first day of a one-week fall
signing period.
"I think it's fitting that we were able to sign two quality Montana
kids, as recruiting in this state is a priority for us," Huse said. "We're
excited about their future as Bobcats."
Huse likes Edwards' physical skills, particularly on the defensive
end. "It's difficult to find a combination of size and athleticism that Jeff
brings to our program," Huse said. "I'm impressed with how he's worked to
improve himself, he will be almost ready physically when he gets to campus.
He played for a great coach (John Thatcher) in high school, and he'll have
to continue refining his offensive game, but his best basketball is ahead of
him."
Edwards averaged 11 points and 6.5 rebounds a game as a junior,
leading Butte High to the Class AA State Tournament. In the past two
seasons, he has blocked 220 shots, and after making the AA All-Tournament
Team as a sophomore he was a First Team All-State selection as a junior.
"Jeff Edwards is a great defensive player," said Butte head coach
John Thatcher. "He'll be a great fit in the Bobcat system. He's just the
kind of post player Coach Huse is really going to be able to use. I don't
think he could go to a better coaching staff than the Montana State
Bobcats."
Howard brings strong bloodlines to the MSU program. Both his parents
graduated from MSU, and his mother, Kathleen McLaughlin Howard, remains the
career scoring and rebounding leader in MSU women's basketball history. "We
like Bobby for a lot of reasons," Huse said. "He's a very good basketball
player, he fits our style of play, he's tough. He had a great high school
career, and he's multi-dimensional offensively. He can score inside and
outside. On top of that he grew up a Bobcat, and I couldn't be more thrilled
to bring Bobby into this program."
Howard earned Great Falls Tribune Superstate honors for the second
straight year as a junior, leading Great Falls High to its first state title
since 1995. He led Class AA with 20.8 points a game, and finished second in
the state with 10.1 rebounds. He shot 49% from the floor, 38% from
three-point range, and has scored in double-digits 48 times in his prep
career. Howard played for his father, Bob Howard, at Great Falls High.
"From a personal standpoint it's great that we'll be able to see him
play, and I think it will work out well," said Great Falls High coach Bob
Howard, Bobby Howard's father and an MSU graduate. "I think MSU basketball
has a bright future, and I'm excited that he'll be a part of it. I think he
has his best basketball in front of him. In the past the better the
competition the better he plays. I'm looking forward to him getting stronger
and improving once he gets to MSU."
Huse indicated the Bobcats could sign additional players during the
fall signing period, which concludes next Wednesday.

rtb-

Thanks for the article I did not realize that Bobby was the first since Hatler from GFH to get a full ride I thought maybe Warhank got one from the Griz. Also I liked what Huse said in the MSU release and this article about Howard's toughness and drive that was something I noticed watching him this spring and summer at AAU events he was not afraid to step in and take the charge if the team needed it.

It sounds like from the article they will probably not be redshirting him which I think is a good move. I think he is one of the few freshmen that has the physical body and mental maturity to be able to handle playing as a true freshman.

Warhank was not offered a scholarship by any D-1 schools out of Highschool, But did earn one from the Griz after redshirting and playing as a freshman as a walk-on

I believe today (Tues the 14th) is the last day of the early signing period. I still hear that Huse will sign a third athlete before the end of the period. The same goes for Binford. If we do sign a couple more athetes in basketball they should announce it by Friday if not sooner, but there has been a few times when it has taken a little longer. The athlete snail mails the LOI or a few transcript issues need to be resolved, I even know of one case where the school needed to verify that a parents/guardian signature was correct on the LOI.

Binford signed her third and it was in today's Chronicle.
Eliza Dy, a 5-foot-4 point guard playing for Diamond Ranch High School in Pomona, Calif., has become the third member of the 2007-08 recruiting class for Montana State women’s basketball.
